Slug Generator

Clean URL slugs from titles, including accented and Hindi text, one or hundreds at once

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Updated on 24 Oct 2026.

A URL slug should be lowercase, hyphenated and free of accents, which is fiddly for anything but plain English. This handles accented and Hindi text, and converts 1 title or hundreds pasted as a list. Nothing you paste is uploaded anywhere.

How to convert a title into a URL slug

1

Paste a title into Title or text on the Single tab; English, Hindi and accented text all work.

2

Choose the Separator and Max length, and switch Lower case, Remove stop words or ASCII only on or off.

3

For a list, open Bulk, one per line and paste one title per line; Number repeats adds -2 to duplicates.

4

Press Copy for one slug, or use Copy all or Download CSV for the whole list.

About the Slug Generator

This slug generator turns a title into a clean URL slug: lower case, words joined by hyphens, accents removed and punctuation dropped, so "Crème Brûlée & 10 Desserts" becomes creme-brulee-and-10-desserts. Choose a hyphen, underscore or dot as the separator, keep the original case if your system needs it, remove filler words, and cap the length at a word boundary.

Bloggers and content teams use it to write readable URLs for posts and product pages, and developers use it to create file names, database keys and anchor IDs. Bulk mode takes one title per line, for example a spreadsheet column of product names, and can number repeats so every slug is unique.

Accented Latin letters lose their marks through Unicode decomposition, and letters without a plain equivalent are spelled out: ß is ss, æ is ae, ø is o, ł is l, þ is th. Hindi, Marathi and other Devanagari text is transliterated the way most Indian sites write URLs, so हिंदी समाचार becomes hindi-samachar. Consonants carry an inherent a that is dropped at the end of a word, long vowels are written short, ं becomes n (m before p or b), and ज्ञ becomes gya. The full table is on the page. Scripts without a mapping, such as Chinese or Arabic, are dropped with a note, or kept as Unicode if you switch off ASCII only.

Transliteration of names is an approximation, so read the slug before publishing. Everything runs in your browser; only your options are remembered.

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

The slug is the readable part of a web address that identifies a page, such as how-to-file-itr-online in example.com/blog/how-to-file-itr-online. Good slugs are short, lower case, use hyphens between words and describe the page, which helps people decide to click and helps search engines understand the topic.

Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?

Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator but has historically read underscores as joining words, so best_seo_tips may be seen as one word. Use underscores or dots only where a system requires them, such as file names or programming identifiers.

How are Hindi titles turned into English letters?

Devanagari is transliterated letter by letter into the spelling most Indian sites use: भारत becomes bharat, नमस्ते becomes namaste and प्रधानमंत्री becomes pradhanmantri. The inherent a is dropped where Hindi speakers drop it. The complete mapping is shown on the page; names may need a hand edit.

Should I remove stop words from slugs?

Often, yes: words like the, a, of and and make URLs longer without adding meaning, so the-best-way-to-learn-a-language becomes best-way-learn-language. Question words such as how and what are kept because how-to pages rely on them. If removing stop words would leave nothing, they are kept.

How long should a slug be?

Three to six meaningful words, roughly under 60 characters, is a good target. Long slugs get cut off in search results and are hard to share. Set a maximum length and the tool cuts at the last whole word that fits, so a slug never ends in half a word.

Can I make slugs for a whole list at once?

Yes. Switch to Bulk, paste one title per line, and every line gets its own slug, ready to copy back into a spreadsheet. Turn on unique numbering and repeated titles get -2, -3 and so on, as a content system would need. Blank lines are skipped.
