Compress PDF

files

Make a scanned or photo-heavy PDF smaller, with text kept selectable

Processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Updated on 24 Oct 2026.

Compressing a PDF re-encodes the pictures inside it while leaving the text selectable. A ten-page phone scan of 12 MB usually comes out at 2 to 5 MB with no visible change, or about 1 MB on Smaller file; you can also set an exact target size. Up to 10 files of 100 MB each, none of them uploaded.

Next:
  • Merge it with other PDFs Combine PDFs and reorder pages by dragging, all on your device
  • Sign the PDF Draw, type or upload your signature and place it on any page
  • Protect the PDF with a password Add a password to a PDF with AES-256, without uploading it

About Compress PDF

Compress PDF makes a PDF smaller by re-saving the photos and scanned pages inside it at a lower resolution and quality. You pick Smaller file, Balanced or Better quality, or type a target such as 200 KB, and you see the size before and after for every file along with the total saved.

People use it when an exam, bank or job portal rejects a scanned certificate for being too large, or when a report full of photos will not attach to an email. A ten-page phone scan of 12 MB often ends up around 2 to 5 MB on Balanced, which keeps the pages looking the same even zoomed in, or around 1 MB on Smaller file. A target-size run tries lighter settings step by step and keeps the best quality that fits; if nothing fits, it tells you the smallest size it reached.

How it works, and the trade-off: only pictures are re-encoded, as JPEG, capped at 100, 150 or 200 dots per inch of the page. Text, fonts, links and vector drawings are not touched, so words stay sharp, selectable and searchable, including the hidden text layer that scanner apps add. The cost is that a PDF made mostly of text barely shrinks, and images stored as black-and-white fax, JBIG2, CMYK or palette data are left as they are. If the result is not smaller, you get your original back, never a bigger file.

Everything runs on your device: nothing is uploaded, up to 10 PDFs of 100 MB each. A password-protected PDF asks for its password inline; the compressed copy is saved without it, so use Protect PDF afterwards if it needs one. To drop whole pages, use Organize PDF first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce the size of a PDF?

Drop the PDF on this page, pick Balanced (or Smaller file if it must be tiny), and click Compress. The photos and scans inside are re-saved at a lower resolution, and you see the size before and after. Download the smaller copy with one click. No signup and no upload.

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No. The compression runs in your browser on your own device. The file never leaves your computer or phone, which is why certificates, bank statements and ID scans are safe to compress here, and why there is nothing to delete afterwards.

How do I compress a PDF to 100 KB or 200 KB?

Choose Target size and type 100 or 200, or open the Compress PDF to 100 KB page. The tool tries lighter settings one after another and keeps the best quality that fits. A one or two page scan usually fits; if a long file cannot, it tells you the smallest size it reached.

Will the text in my PDF still be selectable after compressing?

Yes. Only pictures are re-encoded. Typed text, fonts, links and drawings are left exactly as they were, so you can still select, search and copy words, including the invisible text layer that scanner apps add to scanned pages.

Why did my PDF not get smaller?

Its size comes from text and fonts rather than pictures, or its images are already compact or stored in formats this tool leaves alone, such as black-and-white fax or CMYK. In that case you get your original back instead of a bigger file, with a note explaining why.

What are the limits?

Up to 10 PDFs at a time, each up to 100 MB and 2,000 pages. Images larger than 50 megapixels are left untouched so a phone does not run out of memory. A protected PDF needs its password, and the compressed copy is saved without it.

PDF ka size kaise kam kare?

PDF ko chhota karne ke liye, add the file, pick Balanced or type a target such as 100 KB, and press Compress. Only the pictures inside are re-saved, so text stays selectable. Up to 10 PDFs at a time, each 100 MB and 2,000 pages. A PDF made mostly of text barely shrinks.
