Estimates only, not financial advice. What you type stays on your device. Checked against sources on 1 Oct 2026.The United States has 11 federal holidays, set by 5 U.S.C. 6103. Six fall on a fixed date and five on a set Monday or Thursday. A fixed holiday on a Saturday is observed the Friday before and on a Sunday the Monday after, so 4 July 2026 is observed Friday 3 July.

The Federal Holiday Calendar lists the US legal public holidays for any year from 1986 to 2200, with the date of each holiday, its weekday, and the day federal employees actually have off.
The eleven holidays are set by 5 U.S.C. 6103: New Year's Day (1 January), Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (third Monday in January), Washington's Birthday (third Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Juneteenth National Independence Day (19 June), Independence Day (4 July), Labor Day (first Monday in September), Columbus Day (second Monday in October), Veterans Day (11 November), Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November) and Christmas Day (25 December).
Observed days. The Monday and Thursday holidays never move. A fixed-date holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before (section 6103(b)), and one on a Sunday on the Monday after (Executive Order 11582). When 1 January is a Saturday, as in 2028, the day off is Friday 31 December of the year before. These are the rules for a Monday to Friday schedule; OPM publishes the same dates each year, and this page was checked against OPM's tables for 2021, 2022 and 2025 to 2028.
History. Juneteenth became a federal holiday on 17 June 2021, so years before 2021 show ten holidays. Inauguration Day (20 January every fourth year, next in 2029) is a holiday only for federal employees in the Washington, DC area; switch it on to see it. On a Sunday it moves to Monday 21 January, and on a Saturday there is no day in lieu.
What the calendar does not show: extra days a President grants by executive order in a particular year, such as Christmas Eve in some years; state holidays; and bank, school or stock market closures, which follow their own calendars. Private employers are not required to give federal holidays off. A future Act of Congress could add a holiday; the rules here are those in force when checked on 1 October 2026.
New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. All eleven are listed in 5 U.S.C. 6103, the federal law on legal public holidays. Juneteenth, added in June 2021, is the newest.
A holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and a holiday on a Sunday on the Monday after, for federal employees on a Monday to Friday schedule. In 2026 Independence Day is a Saturday, so Friday 3 July is the day off. Only the six fixed-date holidays can move.
When 1 January falls on a Saturday, the Friday before is the day off, and that Friday is 31 December of the previous year. The next time is New Year's Day 2028, observed on Friday 31 December 2027. OPM lists that day under 2028, and this calendar shows it the same way.
Not under federal law. The Department of Labor says the Fair Labor Standards Act does not require payment for time not worked, such as holidays, federal or otherwise. Holiday pay and days off are a matter of agreement between employer and employee, so a contract or handbook sets them for a private job.
Only for federal employees in the Washington, DC area, on 20 January every fourth year: 2025, then 2029. If 20 January is a Sunday the holiday moves to Monday 21 January; if it is a Saturday there is no substitute day. Switch on Inauguration Day to add it to the calendar for those years.
A President can close federal offices for an extra day by executive order, as has been done for Christmas Eve in some years, but such a day is a one-time grant rather than a rule. This calendar shows only the holidays set by law, so check OPM's page for any extra day announced for the year.
