India writes and names large numbers differently from most of the world, and the same figure can look like two different numbers. Twelve crore thirty-four lakh is written 12,34,56,789 in India and 123,456,789 elsewhere. This converter shows any number both ways and names it in lakh and crore and in million and billion, as you type. It runs in the browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
The names do not line up. A lakh is 100,000 and a crore is 10,000,000, while a million is 1,000,000 and a billion 1,000,000,000. So:
| Indian | International |
|---|---|
| 10 lakh | 1 million |
| 1 crore | 10 million |
| 100 crore | 1 billion |
| 1 lakh crore | 1 trillion |

Ten million make one crore. A crore is 1,00,00,000 in Indian digits and 10,000,000 in international digits: the same number with the commas in different places. So 2.5 crore is 25 million, 10 crore is 100 million, and 100 crore is 1,000 million, which is one billion.
Ten lakh make one million. A lakh is 100,000, so a million, 1,000,000, is ten of them. To turn lakh into million, divide by ten: a salary of 25 lakh a year is 2.5 million. To turn million into lakh, multiply by ten: 0.8 million is 8 lakh.
One billion is 100 crore. A billion is 1,000,000,000, which in Indian digits is 1,00,00,00,000: one hundred crore. So a figure of 5 billion is 500 crore, and 1 trillion, a thousand billion, is 1 lakh crore, the unit Indian budget and GDP figures are often given in.
No. Lakh, crore, million and billion are only names for powers of ten, so the conversion changes the count, not the money. 1 crore rupees is 10 million rupees. A figure of 10 million dollars is 1 crore dollars; to get rupees, multiply by the exchange rate separately.
