Indian accounts, tax and most company reporting run on a financial year from 1 April to 31 March. January to March therefore belong to the year that started the April before, which is where most mix-ups happen. Enter a date, or leave it on today, and the calculator shows the financial year it falls in, the assessment year, the quarter, the day number and how many days are left until 31 March. Assessment year. Income earned in a financial year is assessed in the following year: FY 2025-26 is AY 2026-27. Returns, challans and notices under the Income-tax Act 1961 are labelled by assessment year.
Tax year from April 2026. The Income-tax Act 2025 applies to income from 1 April 2026 and drops the words "previous year" and "assessment year". Income of FY 2026-27 is "tax year 2026-27", and incometax.gov.in says its returns are due in July 2027. The calculator shows both names, because forms and software will use each for some time.
Return due dates. The Finance Act 2026 set three dates, confirmed on incometax.gov.in for AY 2026-27:
| Who files | Due date in the year after the FY |
|---|---|
| Salaried, pension, house property, capital gains (ITR-1, ITR-2) | 31 July |
| Business or profession with no audit, from FY 2025-26 | 31 August |
| Accounts that must be audited | 31 October |
Before FY 2025-26, business cases without audit also had 31 July. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the date by order in some years, so check incometax.gov.in before relying on it.
Quarters. Q1 is April to June, Q2 July to September, Q3 October to December and Q4 January to March, the same quarters used for TDS returns and company results.
What it does not do. It does not work out tax, interest or late fees, and it does not cover advance-tax instalments or a company's own accounting year.
India's financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March. On 30 September 2026 the current financial year is FY 2026-27, which ends on 31 March 2027. January, February and March always belong to the year that began the April before, so 15 February 2027 is still FY 2026-27.
The financial year is when income is earned; the assessment year is the next year, when that income is assessed and the return is filed. FY 2025-26 is AY 2026-27. Under the Income-tax Act 2025, which applies from April 2026, the earning year is called the tax year and the assessment year label is no longer used.
For salaried people and others without business income, filing ITR-1 or ITR-2, the due date is 31 July after the financial year ends. Business or professional income that needs no audit has 31 August from FY 2025-26, and audited accounts have 31 October. CBDT sometimes extends a date, so check incometax.gov.in.
Quarters of the Indian financial year start in April. Q1 is April to June, Q2 is July to September, Q3 is October to December and Q4 is January to March. These are the quarters used for TDS returns, GST quarterly filing and company results. A date in August is in Q2.
Tax year is the Income-tax Act 2025 name for the twelve months from 1 April to 31 March in which income is earned, replacing previous year and assessment year. Income from April 2026 to March 2027 is tax year 2026-27, and incometax.gov.in says its returns are due in July 2027.
Look at the month. From April to December the financial year starts in that same calendar year; from January to March it started the year before. So 10 March 2027 is FY 2026-27. To see the financial year kaise pata kare automatically, enter the date here and read the FY, AY and quarter.
