How to find your shoe size from foot length in cm

1

Stand on paper against a wall, mark your longest toe, and measure from the wall to the mark.

2

"Foot length" is already selected under "I know my"; choose cm or inches under "Measured in".

3

Type the longer foot in "Foot length, heel to longest toe".

4

Read "UK and India", "US men", "US women" and "EU", and the note if you fall between two sizes.

How Shoe Size by Foot Length works

Shoe sizes look arbitrary but each system is a simple rule applied to the length of the last, the foot-shaped form a shoe is built on, which is about 1.5 cm longer than the foot. A UK size steps by a third of an inch, the old barleycorn; an EU size steps by two thirds of a centimetre, the Paris point. US men's sizes are the UK size plus one, and US women's sizes, on the Brannock scale used in American shops, add another one and a half.

Why the charts disagree. Because the UK and EU steps are different lengths, most sizes fall between two sizes in the other system, and each brand rounds its own way. An EU 41 sits between UK 7 and 7.5; some brands call it 7, others 7.5. This converter shows the exact figure beside the nearest half size, so you can see when a result is close to the line.

Measure instead of guessing. Stand on paper against a wall, mark your longest toe, and measure the length in centimetres, in the evening, when feet are largest. Enter that and choose the size for the longer foot. Sizes here are for adults; children's scales restart at zero and differ between countries.

Frequently asked questions

Is a UK shoe size the same as an Indian shoe size?

Yes, in practice. Indian brands and shops use the UK scale, often labelled UK/IND, so a UK 8 and an Indian 8 are the same shoe. The Bureau of Indian Standards has proposed a separate Indian system, but shoes in shops today are still sold in UK sizes.

How do I convert women's shoe sizes to men's?

On the US scale, a women's size is one and a half larger than the men's size for the same foot, so women's 8.5 is men's 7. UK and EU sizes use one scale for everyone, so a UK 6 is a UK 6 whether the shoe is sold as men's or women's.

How do I measure my foot for shoe size?

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall and mark the tip of your longest toe. Measure from the wall to the mark in centimetres. Measure both feet in the evening, when feet are at their largest, and enter the longer length. Wear the socks you will wear with the shoes.

Why does my size differ between brands?

Each system is a formula on the length of the last, but brands choose their own toe allowance and round in-between sizes their own way. That is why a Nike EU 42 is a US 8.5 while this converter shows 9. Expect up to half a size of difference, and check the brand chart when buying online.
