Add Album Art to MP3

files

Put a cover picture into an MP3 so phones, car stereos and players show it

Processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Checked against sources on 17 Oct 2026.

Players show the picture stored inside the MP3 itself, in an ID3 frame called APIC. Drop the song here, press Add cover and choose a JPEG or PNG, and the picture is written into the tag as the front cover. The sound is not touched: the audio frames are copied byte for byte behind the new tag. A square picture of 500 to 1,000 pixels looks sharp on phones and car screens.

Next:
  • Cut the audio Cut one or more pieces out of an audio file and save them separately or joined
  • Change the volume Make an audio file louder or quieter by an exact amount, with the clipping counted first

How Add Album Art to MP3 works

The names a music player shows do not come from the file name. They come from an ID3 tag stored inside the MP3, usually at its very start. A file renamed to the right song can still play as Track 01 by Unknown Artist until that tag is fixed.

Field ID3 frame
Title, artist, album TIT2, TPE1, TALB
Album artist TPE2
Year TYER (v2.3) or TDRC (v2.4)
Track and disc, such as 4/12 TRCK, TPOS
Genre, with the 126 standard names suggested TCON
Comment COMM
Cover picture, JPEG or PNG APIC, front cover

How the file is written. The new tag is written in the version the file already had, so a v2.3 file stays v2.3 for older car stereos and a v2.4 file keeps its UTF-8 text. Tags with names in other scripts are stored as UTF-16 or UTF-8, so Cyrillic, Japanese and accented names survive. Frames this page does not show, such as lyrics, ratings, replay gain or chapter marks, are copied across unchanged. An ID3v1 tag at the end of the file is updated too.

Frequently asked questions

How do I edit the tags of an MP3?

Drop the MP3 on MP3 Tag Editor. Its current title, artist, album, year, track, genre, comment and cover appear in boxes. Change what is wrong and press Save MP3 with these tags. The file downloads with the new tags, and any music player reads the corrected names from it.

How do I add album art to an MP3?

Open the MP3 here, press Add cover and choose a JPEG or PNG picture. The picture is stored inside the file as the front cover in an APIC frame, which phones, car stereos, iTunes and Windows Media Player all show. A square image of 500 to 1,000 pixels works best.

Why does my song still show the old name?

Many players keep a library of tags they have already read. After saving, replace the old file with the new one, then refresh the library or remove and add the song again. On a phone, restarting the music app usually makes it read the new tag.

Is my music uploaded anywhere?

No. The MP3 is read and rewritten by your own browser, and the new file is created on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so unreleased songs and private recordings stay private. Closing the tab clears everything.
