Encrypt / Decrypt File

Lock any file with a password using AES-256, and open it again

Processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Updated on 24 Oct 2026.

Encrypting a file with AES-256 makes it unreadable without the password, which is what to do before sending anything sensitive by email or chat. Files up to 1024 MB, 10 at a time. The password never leaves your browser, so we could not open them either.

How to encrypt a file with a password

1

Leave What to do on Encrypt a file, then press Select files or drop the files onto the page.

2

Type a Password and the same again in Confirm password, and save it somewhere safe; there is no recovery.

3

Turn on Hide the file name in the download too if the name itself is private.

4

Press Encrypt, then Download to save each file as a .enc; nothing is uploaded.

About Encrypt / Decrypt File

Encrypt File locks any file with a password you choose, using AES-256-GCM, and gives you a single .enc file that only that password opens. The same page decrypts it again: drop the .enc file in, type the password, and the original comes back with its own name, byte for byte.

People use it to send a scanned passport or bank statement by email, to keep tax papers safe on a shared laptop or in cloud storage, and to hand a client a backup that stays private even if the pen drive is lost. It works with every file type, from a two-line note to a one gigabyte video, because it never tries to understand the file; it only protects the bytes.

Everything runs in your browser with the WebCrypto engine built into it. Nothing is uploaded, and the password is never stored or sent. Your password is stretched with PBKDF2-SHA-256 over 600,000 rounds with a random salt, which makes guessing slow, and the file is sealed in 1 MB chunks, each with its own nonce and authentication tag, so a large file shows progress and any change, reordering or cut-off is detected. The original file name is encrypted too; only the size shows from outside. Files up to 1 GB each, ten at a time.

There is no password recovery and no back door. If you forget the password, the file cannot be opened by you, by us or by anyone, so store it in a password manager. Use a long passphrase of four or more random words. To share a set of files in a format anyone can open, Protect ZIP makes a password-protected zip instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I encrypt a file with a password for free?

Drop the file on the page, type a password of at least 8 characters, confirm it and click Encrypt. You download a .enc file that opens only with that password. There is no signup, no watermark and no upload; the whole job runs in your browser.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and encrypted by your own browser using its built-in WebCrypto engine. Neither the file nor the password leaves your device, and the password is forgotten as soon as the job ends. The page keeps working with the internet switched off.

I forgot the password. Can you recover the file?

No, and nobody else can either. The key is made only from your password, and nothing about it is kept anywhere. That is what makes the encryption trustworthy, and why the password belongs in a password manager before you delete the original.

How strong is the encryption?

The file is encrypted with AES-256 in GCM mode, which also detects any change to the file. The key comes from your password through PBKDF2-SHA-256 with 600,000 rounds and a random salt, following current OWASP guidance. A long passphrase matters more than any setting: use four or more random words.

How does the other person open the .enc file?

The recipient opens this page, chooses Decrypt, drops the .enc file in and types the password. The original file comes back with its own name. Send the password by a different route from the file, such as a phone call or a different messaging app.

What are the limits?

Any file type, up to 1 GB per file and ten files at a time. Files over 500 MB need a desktop browser with plenty of free memory. Passwords are 8 to 256 characters. Only .enc files made by this tool can be decrypted here.
