How to turn a video you own into MP3, from YouTube, Instagram, Facebook or your phone
The short answer. First get the video as a file through the platform's own route: YouTube Studio for your uploads, Instagram's Download button or data export, Facebook's Download reel, or X's archive. Then open Video to MP3, choose the file and save the sound. It runs in your browser, uploads nothing, and usually gives an .m4a, which plays everywhere an MP3 does.
The second step is the easy one. The first is where people go wrong, because "YouTube to MP3" sites skip it by ripping the stream, and YouTube's terms forbid that. This page covers both steps the allowed way.
Step 1: get the video as a file on your device
Each platform has exactly one official way to give you an actual video file, and it is usually limited to your own uploads:
| Platform | Whose videos | How to get the file | Full guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Yours | YouTube Studio → Content → three dots → Download (MP4, 720p or 360p), or Google Takeout for the whole channel | YouTube guide |
| Public reels where the creator allows it, and your own | Share → Download; your own posts through Export your information | Instagram guide | |
| Yours | Your profile → Reels → Options → Download reel | Facebook guide | |
| X (Twitter) | Others' with Premium, if the uploader allows; yours | Three dots → Download video, or your X archive | X guide |
| WhatsApp, your camera, a screen recording | Already yours | The file is already in your gallery, camera roll or Files app | No step needed |
What does not work. A video downloaded inside the YouTube app, free or with Premium, is stored encrypted and plays only in the YouTube app, so no tool can open it, this one included. For music from YouTube, the allowed way to listen offline is a YouTube Music Premium download inside the YouTube Music app.
Step 2: take the sound out with Video to MP3
Video to MP3 copies the soundtrack out of an MP4, MOV or M4V file without converting it, so the sound is exactly what was in the video. It runs in your browser: the file is never uploaded, so it works on a private recording and on a slow connection. One file at a time, up to 1 GB.
On Android:
- Open Video to MP3 in Chrome.
- Tap the drop area and choose the video from Gallery or Files. Downloaded reels are usually in the Download or Instagram folder.
- Leave the format on the default and tap the button to save the audio. It lands in your Downloads folder.
On iPhone:
- Open Video to MP3 in Safari.
- Tap the drop area, then Photo Library for a video in your camera roll, or Choose File for one in the Files app.
- Save the audio. Safari puts it in Files → Downloads.
On a computer: drag the video file onto the page and save the audio.
To keep only part of it, such as one song from a wedding video, turn on the part-of-it switch and set a start and end, or cut the audio afterwards with Audio Cutter.
Why do I get an .m4a and not an .mp3?
Almost every MP4 video carries its sound as AAC, not MP3, and an .m4a is simply that AAC track in its own file. Copying it out keeps the sound identical; converting to MP3 would compress it a second time and make it slightly worse. An .m4a plays on phones, WhatsApp, VLC and nearly every car stereo made since about 2010.
Video to MP3 gives a genuine .mp3 when the video already holds an MP3 track, which some older files do. If an editor or transcription service needs uncompressed sound, choose WAV; a minute of stereo comes to about 11 MB.
If your file is a .mkv or .webm, which Video to MP3 does not open, convert it first with MOV to MP4 Converter, then take the sound out.
Is turning a YouTube video into MP3 allowed?
Only for a video you own, using the file YouTube Studio gives you. YouTube's terms forbid downloading content except through YouTube's own features or with permission from YouTube and the rights holders, so "YouTube to MP3" converter sites are not an allowed route. Instagram, Facebook and X forbid collecting content by automated means as well.
The difference is where the file comes from. Taking the sound out of a video that is already legitimately on your device, such as your own upload, a reel downloaded with Instagram's own button, or a family video from your phone, is just editing your own file. A song in someone else's video still belongs to whoever owns it, whichever tool extracts it, so personal listening and publishing it again are very different things. This is general information, not legal advice.
Questions people ask
Can I convert a YouTube video to MP3 without a converter site?
Only a video from your own channel. Download it from YouTube Studio as an MP4, then take the sound out with Video to MP3 in your browser. Videos downloaded in the YouTube app, free or Premium, are encrypted and cannot be opened by any tool. For other people's music, YouTube Music Premium offers offline listening inside its app.
Will the .m4a file play in my car or on WhatsApp?
Almost certainly. iPhones, Android phones, WhatsApp, VLC, Windows Media Player and nearly every car stereo built since about 2010 play .m4a, because it is the same AAC sound most MP3 players already decode. Renaming the file to .mp3 does not help and can confuse some players, since the name is not what tells them how to decode it.
How do I get audio from an Instagram reel?
Download the reel with Instagram's own Share → Download button, which works on public reels whose creator allows it, then open the file in Video to MP3. Instagram includes only the reel's original sound in a download; a licensed song from its music library usually does not come through, so the file may be silent.
Is my video uploaded when I use Video to MP3?
No. Video to MP3 reads the file inside your browser tab, so the video never leaves your phone or computer. It keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how many files you do, one at a time, up to 1 GB each.
Can I extract audio from a WhatsApp video?
Yes, because a WhatsApp video saved to your phone is already an ordinary MP4 file. On Android it is usually in the gallery or the WhatsApp folder in Files; on iPhone, save it to Photos from the chat first. Then choose it in Video to MP3. Whether you may share the audio still depends on who made it.
