Convert MOV, MKV, WebM or GIF to MP4, copying H.264 video instead of re-encoding it

Processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Updated on 24 Oct 2026.

Drop a MOV, MKV or WebM file and press Convert. H.264 and H.265 video is copied into the MP4, not re-encoded, so a 2 GB iPhone clip converts in seconds with no quality lost. VP9 and AV1 video is re-encoded to H.264, and the page says so before you start. Nothing is uploaded.

4

Press Convert to MP4 and choose where to save it, or let the browser download it.

About the MOV to MP4 Converter

The MOV to MP4 Converter turns a MOV, MKV or WebM video into an MP4, changing as little as it can.

Copied, not re-encoded. A MOV from an iPhone or a camera, and most MKV files, already hold H.264 or H.265 pictures and AAC sound, which is exactly what an MP4 holds. Only the container differs. So every compressed frame is copied from the old file into the new one as it is: nothing is decoded, nothing is compressed again, and a 1 GB file takes seconds rather than minutes. The page shows how many frames were copied, normally 100 per cent.

Re-encoded, and why. WebM files from screen recorders and browsers usually hold VP9 or VP8 pictures, and some newer files hold AV1. MP4 can technically carry these, but QuickTime, iPhones, many TVs and most editors will not play them from an MP4, so they are decoded and encoded to H.264. That takes roughly as long as the video plays, often less on a computer with a hardware encoder, and softens the picture slightly. Opus, Vorbis, MP3 and FLAC sound is converted to AAC at 256 kbps. Five-channel and six-channel sound is mixed down to stereo.

Phone videos stay the right way up. A portrait iPhone video is stored sideways with a note saying how to turn it. That note is carried into the MP4, so it plays upright. Edit lists, which trim the first frames or delay the sound, are applied so picture and sound stay in step.

What it does not do. Subtitles, chapters and second audio tracks in an MKV are left out; the default audio track is used. Dolby AC-3 and DTS sound, and uncompressed PCM sound in a MOV, cannot be read here, so those files come out silent, and the page warns first. ProRes, AVI and WMV are not supported. H.265 is copied as H.265, not converted to H.264.

GIF to MP4. An animated GIF is encoded to H.264, each frame shown for its own delay and played up to ten times, usually at a fraction of the GIF's size.

Large files. Nothing is uploaded. In Chrome and Edge the MP4 is written straight to the place you choose while it is made, so files up to 20 GB work. Other browsers build it in memory, which is safe up to 2 GB.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MOV to MP4 without losing quality?

Drop the MOV here and press Convert. iPhone and camera MOV files hold H.264 or H.265 video and AAC sound, which MP4 holds too, so every frame is copied into the new file unchanged. Nothing is compressed again, and the MP4 looks exactly like the MOV.

Can I convert MKV to MP4 without re-encoding?

Yes, when the MKV holds H.264 or H.265 video, as most do. The frames are moved into an MP4 as they are, in seconds. AAC sound is copied; Opus or Vorbis sound is converted to AAC. Subtitles, chapters and extra audio tracks are left out.

Why is my WebM video re-encoded?

WebM files usually hold VP9 or VP8 video, which QuickTime, iPhones and many TVs will not play from an MP4. The page decodes every frame and encodes it as H.264, the format every MP4 player reads. The page says this before you press the button, with the reason.

Will my portrait iPhone video turn sideways?

No. An iPhone stores portrait video sideways with a note telling players to turn it 90 degrees. The converter carries that note into the MP4, so the video plays upright in every player that reads MP4 rotation, which is all the common ones.

Why does my MKV come out without sound?

Sound in Dolby AC-3 or DTS cannot be decoded in a browser, and uncompressed PCM sound inside a MOV is not read here yet, so none of these can go into the MP4. The page warns before converting. A desktop program such as HandBrake converts those files with the sound.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 20 GB work in Chrome and Edge, which write the MP4 straight to disk as it is made. Firefox and Safari build the MP4 in memory, which is safe up to 2 GB. Nothing is uploaded in either case.
