F&O charges worked on contract value for futures and on premium for options

Estimates only, not financial advice. What you type stays on your device. Checked against sources on 30 Oct 2026.

Derivatives charge on two different bases and confusing them is expensive. A futures trade is charged on the whole contract value, price times lot size times lots, not on the margin you put up. An option is charged on the premium alone, so the percentages look small against the strike and are large against what you actually paid.

How to calculate F&O brokerage and charges

1

The page opens on Equity options with the Discount broker, flat plan of 20 per order, and an example premium of 50 to 70 on 500 units.

2

Change the Segment to Equity futures for a futures trade.

3

Enter the Buy premium, Sell premium and Quantity as lots times lot size.

4

Read Total charges on this round trip, Your broker's share and Profit after charges.

How Futures and Options Brokerage Calculator works

Exactly one number in the cost of a trade belongs to your broker. Every other one is set by the government or the exchange and is identical for everybody. This page keeps the two apart, because confusing them is how people compare brokers badly.

Two rate changes nearly everybody has missed

Securities transaction tax on derivatives rose on 1 April 2026: futures from 0.02% to 0.05%, options from 0.10% to 0.15% of premium. Those were themselves increases from October 2024, so most calculators are two revisions behind. Both figures are shown, and an older contract note can still be reconciled.

The other is quieter. The exchange charge broker pages quote is the transaction line alone; what leaves your account is that plus the investor protection contribution. NSE moved money between the two in February 2026, total unchanged: 307 rupees per crore on cash, 183 on equity futures, 3,553 on options premium, each side. This page uses the total.

Frequently asked questions

What is the STT rate on options and futures now?

From 1 April 2026 a sold option is taxed at 0.15% of the premium and a sold futures contract at 0.05% of the traded value, both payable by the seller. Until 31 March 2026 those were 0.10% and 0.02%. Most calculators still show the older pair, which understates the cost of an F&O trade.

Why is GST not charged on STT and stamp duty?

GST is a tax on the supply of a service. Brokerage, the exchange transaction charge and the SEBI turnover fee are all charges for services and carry GST at 18%. Securities transaction tax and stamp duty are taxes in their own right rather than payment for anything, so GST is not applied to them.

Is brokerage the same at every broker?

No, and that is why this page asks for it rather than assuming it. Discount brokers commonly charge nothing on delivery and a flat twenty rupees or 0.03% per order, whichever is lower, elsewhere. Full-service brokers charge a percentage with no cap. Copy the figures from your own tariff sheet.

Brokerage charges kaise nikale ek trade par?

Segment chuniye, buy price, sell price aur quantity daaliye, aur apne broker ka rate type kar dijiye; baaki charges kaise lagte hain wo page khud jod deta hai. STT, exchange charge, SEBI fee, stamp duty and GST are fixed for everybody, so only the brokerage line is yours to set.
