Securities transaction tax by segment, at the rates in force since 1 April 2026
Estimates only, not financial advice. What you type stays on your device. Checked against sources on 30 Oct 2026.Securities transaction tax is the largest single charge on most Indian trades and the one people forget. The rates changed on 1 April 2026: a sold futures contract moved from 0.02% to 0.05%, and a sold option from 0.10% to 0.15% of the premium.
Rates and rules read from the sources listed on this page (the earliest on 30 Oct 2026); they may have changed since.
Choose the Segment; STT is charged at a different rate on delivery, intraday, futures and options.
Enter the Buy price, Sell price and Quantity of the trade.
Find the Securities transaction tax line in the charges table; its note gives the rate and the side it is charged on.
Compare it with Government and exchange, the total of all statutory charges on the trade.
Both STT rates are shown here, the current one and the one before it, because a contract note from March will not match today.
Exactly one number in the cost of a trade belongs to your broker. Every other one is set by the government or the exchange and is identical for everybody. This page keeps the two apart, because confusing them is how people compare brokers badly.
Securities transaction tax on derivatives rose on 1 April 2026: futures from 0.02% to 0.05%, options from 0.10% to 0.15% of premium. Those were themselves increases from October 2024, so most calculators are two revisions behind. Both figures are shown, and an older contract note can still be reconciled.
GST is charged at 18% on brokerage, the exchange charge and the SEBI fee, and not on STT or stamp duty: GST is a tax on a service, and a tax is not a service. And stamp duty falls on the buyer alone, in every segment, since collection moved to the clearing corporations on 1 July 2020, which is why a round trip is not symmetric.

From 1 April 2026 a sold option is taxed at 0.15% of the premium and a sold futures contract at 0.05% of the traded value, both payable by the seller. Until 31 March 2026 those were 0.10% and 0.02%. Most calculators still show the older pair, which understates the cost of an F&O trade.
On a round trip of one lakh each way with free brokerage, roughly 233 rupees: 210 of securities transaction tax at 0.1% on both legs, 15 of stamp duty on the buy, 6.45 of exchange transaction charges, 1.20 of GST and 21 paise of SEBI turnover fee. Brokerage and the depository fee come on top.
GST is a tax on the supply of a service. Brokerage, the exchange transaction charge and the SEBI turnover fee are all charges for services and carry GST at 18%. Securities transaction tax and stamp duty are taxes in their own right rather than payment for anything, so GST is not applied to them.
The taxes do, because STT, stamp duty, the SEBI fee and GST are the same wherever the trade is executed. The exchange charge is not: each exchange sets its own. The figure here is NSE's, from its circular of 27 February 2026. BSE's equity cash charge is supported by no BSE notice we could find, so enter your own.
