This calculator follows a German employee's salary for 2026 from gross to net. It is built for a single person without children in statutory health insurance, which is how most employees start.
Social insurance comes first. The employee pays 9.3% for pension and 1.3% for unemployment insurance on salary up to €101,400 a year, and half of 14.6% for health plus half of the fund's Zusatzbeitrag (2.9% on average in 2026) on salary up to €69,750. Long-term care costs 1.8%, or 2.4% for a childless person aged 23 or older, and 2.3% (2.9% childless) in Saxony. Above the ceilings these contributions stop growing.
Income tax is the 2026 tariff. From the salary the calculator takes the €1,230 employee allowance, the €36 special-expenses allowance and the contributions the law lets you deduct: all of the pension contribution, the health contribution less 4% and the care contribution. What remains, rounded down to the euro, goes through the five zones of §32a EStG: nothing up to €12,348, then rates rising from 14% to 42% at €69,879 and 45% above €277,825.
Solidarity surcharge and church tax. The surcharge is 5.5% of the income tax, but only once the tax passes €20,350, with a phase-in above that, so most employees pay none. Church members pay 8% of the income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg and 9% elsewhere.
What it does not do. It shows the tax assessed for the year, which can differ by a few euros over the year from the wage tax your employer withholds. It does not model tax classes other than I, married couples' splitting, children, private health insurance, Midijob earnings, work expenses above the allowance or the church tax cap. The figures and their sources are listed on the page, checked on 29 September 2026. An estimate, not tax advice.
Under §38b EStG, class I covers single and divorced employees; II single parents entitled to the single-parent relief; IV married couples living together, even when one spouse earns no wage; III and V a married couple who jointly apply for that pairing instead; VI a second or further job. The class sets the wage tax withheld each month, while the tax for the year follows from the assessment. This calculator works out class I.
The basic tax-free allowance rose from €12,096 to €12,348. The pension and unemployment insurance ceiling rose from €96,600 to €101,400 a year, and the health and care ceiling from €66,150 to €69,750. The average health Zusatzbeitrag for 2026 is 2.9%. On €60,000 gross that leaves €37,551 net, €3,129 a month.
A single employee without children earning €60,000 in 2026 pays about €9,399 income tax and €13,050 in social insurance, with no solidarity surcharge and no church tax. That leaves about €37,551 a year, or €3,129 a month. Church membership adds 8% or 9% of the income tax, roughly €750 to €850.
The Grundfreibetrag is €12,348 of taxable income for 2026, set in §32a of the Income Tax Act. Taxable income is the salary after the €1,230 employee allowance, the €36 special-expenses allowance and the deductible social contributions, so an employee can earn about €17,100 gross before paying any income tax.
Only taxpayers whose income tax is above €20,350 for a single person. Above that the surcharge rises gradually, at 11.9% of the excess, until it reaches the full 5.5% of the income tax. A single employee usually starts paying it at a gross salary of about €92,000, so most employees pay nothing.
Church tax is 8% of the income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg and 9% in all other states. Only members of a church or religious community that levies the tax pay it. Some states cap it at a share of taxable income on application; that cap is not included in this calculator.
Pension and unemployment contributions stop at a salary of €101,400 a year (€8,450 a month). Health and long-term care contributions stop at €69,750 a year (€5,812.50 a month). Salary above these ceilings pays income tax but no further employee contributions, which is why the marginal rate falls above them.
Employers withhold wage tax with a Vorsorgepauschale, a standard estimate of your deductible contributions, while this calculator uses the annual assessment, which deducts what you actually paid. The gap is usually small. Checked against the Finance Ministry's calculator, the difference was €4 to €14 a year at typical salaries.
