How New Tax Regime Calculator works

This income tax calculator works out what a salaried person in India pays under the old regime and the new regime at once, says which costs less and by how much, and shows the slab-by-slab working for both.

The steps, in plain words

  1. Gross total income is your salary before tax plus other income taxed at slab rates, such as bank interest or rent.
  2. Taxable income is that figure minus the deductions your regime allows. The old regime allows a 50,000 standard deduction, your HRA exemption, professional tax, 80C up to 1,50,000, 80D up to 1,00,000, 80CCD(1B) up to 50,000, your employer's NPS under 80CCD(2), and home loan interest up to 2,00,000 on the house you live in. The new regime allows only the 75,000 standard deduction and the employer's NPS.
  3. Tax before rebate adds up, slab by slab, the part of taxable income inside each slab times that slab's rate. Only the part inside a slab is taxed at that rate.
  4. Rebate. New regime: taxable income up to 12,00,000 pays nothing, and just above that line marginal relief holds the tax down to the income above 12,00,000. Old regime: the rebate covers income up to 5,00,000, with no marginal relief.
  5. Surcharge is a percentage of the tax, charged above 50,00,000, 1,00,00,000, 2,00,00,000 and, in the old regime only, 5,00,00,000. Marginal relief caps tax plus surcharge at what you would pay at the threshold plus the income above it.
  6. Cess is 4% of tax plus surcharge.

Frequently asked questions

Is income up to 12 lakh really tax-free?

In the new regime, taxable income up to 12,00,000 pays nothing because the rebate cancels the tax. A salaried person gets a standard deduction of 75,000 on top, so a salary of 12,75,000 with no other income comes to zero tax. Above that line the rebate shrinks and then stops.

What happens if my income crosses 12 lakh by a small amount?

Marginal relief takes over. The tax is held down to the amount of income above 12,00,000. At a taxable income of 12,10,000 the tax works out to 61,500 before relief, and you pay 10,000 plus 4% cess instead. The relief runs out once your income is about 12,70,600.

What is surcharge and marginal relief?

Surcharge is an extra percentage charged on the tax itself once taxable income passes 50,00,000, 1,00,00,000 or 2,00,00,000 (and 5,00,00,000 in the old regime). Marginal relief stops the jump costing more than the extra income: tax plus surcharge can never exceed what you would pay at the threshold plus the income above it.

Income tax kaise nikale?

Income tax nikale: enter your salary and your deductions, and both regimes are worked out side by side, slab by slab, with rebate, surcharge, marginal relief and 4% cess. In the new regime taxable income up to 12,00,000 pays nothing. Capital gains and business income are not covered. Rates were reviewed on 18 October 2026.
