Federal income tax. The 2026 brackets and standard deduction come from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32: seven rates from 10% to 37%, and a standard deduction of $16,100 for a single filer, $32,200 for married filing jointly and $24,150 for a head of household. Tax is worked out from the rate schedules. For taxable income under $100,000 the official tax tables use $50 bands, so a return can differ by a few dollars.
Paychecks and withholding. Choose weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly pay to see one paycheck line by line. Federal income tax withheld follows IRS Publication 15-T (2026), the percentage method for a 2020 or later Form W-4, including the Step 2 box, Step 3 credits and Step 4 amounts. Pre-tax 401(k) deferrals (capped at $24,500, plus catch-up), HSA contributions and health premiums come off first. A 401(k) still pays Social Security and Medicare; cafeteria-plan items do not. State tax per paycheck is the year's state tax divided by the paychecks, not the state's own withholding tables.
