Tip, total and each person’s share of a bill, with the tip on the pre-tax amount
Estimates only, not financial advice. What you type stays on your device. Updated on 24 Oct 2026.A tip is usually the bill before tax times the tip rate, so 18% of a $77.62 pre-tax amount is $13.97. Adding that tip to the full $84.60 bill, tax included, gives a total of $98.57, which works out to $32.86 each when three people share it evenly.
Type the Bill total and pick a Tip percentage, or tap 15, 18 or 20.
Enter the Tax shown on the receipt and keep Tip on the amount before tax on, as is usual in the US.
Set the Number of people to split the bill between, and turn on Round up each share if you want whole amounts.
Read the tip, the total and each person’s share, and compare other tip rates in the table; Share result copies a link.
Working out a tip at the table is easy to get slightly wrong: tipping on the tax as well, rounding each share down so the group comes up short, or forgetting that 20% of a large bill is not small. This calculator takes the bill, the tax printed on the receipt, the tip rate and the number of people, and gives the tip, the total and each person's share.
Tip before tax. In the US the usual etiquette is to tip on the food and drink, not on the sales tax, so the page starts with Tip on the amount before tax switched on and subtracts the tax you enter. Turn it off to tip on the whole bill, which is what many people do in practice and what some restaurants' suggested tips are based on.
Splitting the bill. The total is divided equally between the number of people. Shares are shown to the cent, and with Round up each share switched on every person pays the next whole dollar or rupee; the page shows how much over the bill that comes to, so the group never pays less than it owes. A table lists the tip, total and share at 10, 15, 18, 20, 22 and 25 percent, which makes it quick to agree on a rate.
How much to tip. Customs differ by country and by service. In the US 15 to 20 percent is common at a sit-down restaurant; in India a service charge may already be on the bill, and the government's 2022 guideline says it cannot be added automatically, so check the receipt before tipping on top. This page only does the arithmetic; the rate is your choice.
What it does not do. It splits evenly; it does not split by what each person ordered. It does not know local tax rates, so the tax is the figure from your receipt.
Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
A 20% tip on ₹1,500 is ₹300, so the bill becomes ₹1,800; shared by two people that is ₹900 each. The sum is the same in any currency: the bill times 20 ÷ 100. Pick "₹ INR" under "Currency" to see rupee symbols and Indian digit grouping; no exchange rate is applied.
Multiply the bill before tax by 0.18. On a $77.62 pre-tax amount that is $13.97, so the bill of $84.60 becomes $98.57. Type the bill, the tax from the receipt and 18 into the calculator, and the tip and total appear straight away.
Etiquette guides in the US usually say before tax, because the tax is not part of the service. Many people simply tip on the whole bill, which adds a little. The calculator starts with tipping before tax and lets you switch it off.
Add the tip to the bill and divide the total by the number of people. A $98.57 total for three people is $32.86 each. Turning on Round up each share makes every share a whole amount, $33 here, and shows the extra over the bill.
Shares are often a fraction of a cent, so rounding each one down loses up to a cent per person, and the group then pays less than the total. The calculator rounds up from the exact share, so the shares always cover the bill.
In the US 15 to 20 percent is common for table service, with more for exceptional service. In India a service charge may already be on the bill and cannot be added automatically under the 2022 government guideline, so check the receipt first. The rate is always your choice.
No. Bills are split evenly between the number of people entered. To split by order, work out each person's own subtotal and run the calculator once per person with the same tip rate and one person.
