Statutory redundancy pay is the minimum an employer must pay an employee made redundant after 2 years or more of service. This page works it out the way GOV.UK and nidirect describe it.
The age bands. Each full year of service earns half a week's pay if you were under 22 for that year, one week if you were 22 to 40, and one and a half weeks if you were 41 or older. The page counts back from the day you were made redundant, the most recent year first, so the years worked at 41 or older are the last ones.
Twenty years at most. Only the last 20 full years count, so the most anyone can receive is 30 weeks of pay.
The weekly cap. Your weekly pay is the average over the 12 weeks before the notice, before tax. For a redundancy on or after 6 April 2026 it is capped at £751 in England, Scotland and Wales (maximum £22,530) and at £783 in Northern Ireland (maximum £23,490). For an earlier redundancy the cap was lower: type it in the cap box.
Who does not get it. Anyone with less than 2 years of service, someone who refuses suitable alternative work without good reason, and the groups GOV.UK lists: Crown servants, the armed forces, the police and share fishermen.
Not included. Redundancy pay in your contract above the statutory amount, notice pay, holiday pay owed and tax. A redundancy payment is tax-free up to £30,000. An estimate, not legal advice.
