This calculator works out how much of each pay goes to your student loan in the 2026 to 2027 tax year, following GOV.UK's repayment guide and HMRC's rates and thresholds for employers. It covers Plans 1, 2, 4 and 5 and the Postgraduate Loan, alone or together.
The rule. Each plan has a yearly threshold, shared out over your pays: Plan 2's £29,385 is £2,448.75 a month or £565.09 a week. You repay 9% of what you earn above it in that pay, rounded down to the whole pound. A Postgraduate Loan takes 6% above £1,750 a month.
An example. On Plan 2 with £3,000 a month, the pay is £551.25 over the threshold, 9% of that is £49.61, and £49 is taken: £588 over a year. The balance and the interest rate do not change the monthly figure.
More than one plan. With Plan 1 and Plan 2 you still make one repayment, 9% over the lower Plan 1 threshold. The lower plan takes at most 9% of the gap between the thresholds, £18 a month, and the rest goes to the other loan. A Postgraduate Loan is always repaid on top, so £2,500 a month with Plan 2 and a Postgraduate Loan repays £45 plus £4.
Pay that changes. Payroll tests each pay on its own, so a bonus month can repay even if the year stays under the threshold; you can then ask for a refund. Each job is tested separately.
Self Assessment. Choose a whole year: HMRC works out 9% of income over the yearly threshold, less what payroll already took.
Not included. Interest, write-off dates, refunds, voluntary repayments and repayments from abroad. An estimate, not financial advice.

For the 2026-27 tax year the yearly thresholds are £26,900 for Plan 1, £29,385 for Plan 2, £33,795 for Plan 4, £25,000 for Plan 5 and £21,000 for a Postgraduate Loan. Payroll uses a monthly or weekly share of each, such as £2,448 a month for Plan 2.
You repay 9% of your pay above your plan's monthly threshold, rounded down to the pound. On Plan 2 with £3,000 a month, 9% of the £551.25 above £2,448.75 is £49.61, so £49 is taken, or £588 over a year. The amount you owe does not change it.
You make a single repayment of 9% over the lower threshold, Plan 1's. GOV.UK's example: £3,200 a month gives £86, of which Plan 1 takes at most £18, which is 9% of the £207 gap between the two thresholds, and the remaining £68 goes to Plan 2.
A Postgraduate Loan is repaid at 6% of pay over £21,000 a year, on top of any Plan 1, 2, 4 or 5 repayment. On £2,500 a month with Plan 2 as well, GOV.UK shows £45 for the Postgraduate Loan plus £4 for Plan 2, a total of £49.
The plan depends on where you applied and when your course started. England from August 2023 is Plan 5; England from September 2012 to July 2023, and Wales from September 2012, is Plan 2; Scotland is Plan 4; Northern Ireland and older loans are Plan 1. Your online account shows it.
HMRC works out the repayment on your whole year's income through your Self Assessment tax return. Choose the year as the pay period: on Plan 1, £42,000 of combined income gives 9% of the £15,100 above £26,900, which is £1,359 for the year, less anything already repaid through a salary.
