Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is the minimum an employer must pay an employee who is too ill to work. This page works it out the way GOV.UK and HMRC describe it for the 2026-27 tax year.
The weekly rate. SSP is £123.25 a week or 80% of your average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. Average weekly earnings are your pay before tax over the 8 weeks before the first full day of sickness. On £145 a week, 80% is £116, so £116 is your rate. From £154.07 a week upwards the flat £123.25 applies.
Qualifying days and the daily rate. SSP is paid only for the days you normally work, called qualifying days. A full week off is paid at the weekly rate. A part week is paid at the daily rate, which is the weekly rate divided by your qualifying days, and HMRC rounds the amount up to the next penny. The Daily amounts tab shows the same table HMRC publishes.
Twenty-eight weeks at most. SSP stops after 28 weeks of qualifying days. Absences less than 8 weeks apart are linked and count as one, so type any SSP days already paid in a linked absence under More options.
From the first day. GOV.UK's 2026 pages pay SSP for every full day off sick that you would have worked, with no waiting days and no minimum earnings mentioned.
Not included. Company sick pay above the statutory amount, absences that began before 6 April 2026, special rules for agency workers and directors, the exceptions such as Statutory Maternity Pay, and tax and National Insurance, which are deducted from SSP. An estimate, not legal advice.
Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
From 6 April 2026 SSP is £123.25 a week or 80% of your average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. Someone earning £145 a week gets £116 a week; anyone earning more than about £154 a week gets the flat £123.25. Tax and National Insurance come off it like wages.
Divide the weekly rate by the number of qualifying days you normally work in a week, then multiply by the qualifying days you are off sick. HMRC rounds the amount up to the next penny, so 2 days at £123.25 over a 7-day week is £35.22.
Up to 28 weeks. Sickness absences that are 8 weeks or less apart are linked and count as one, so SSP already paid in an earlier linked absence uses up part of the 28 weeks. A continuous series of linked absences over 3 years ends the right to SSP.
GOV.UK's pages for 2026-27 say SSP is paid for all the full days you are off sick that you would normally have worked, from the first day of illness. No waiting days and no minimum earnings appear on them, so this calculator pays from day one.
All your pay before tax on which Class 1 National Insurance is due, paid in the 8 weeks up to the last normal payday before you fell sick. Monthly pay is turned into weekly pay by multiplying by 12 and dividing by 52, without rounding.
Yes, if your contract has a company sick pay scheme, sometimes called occupational sick pay. Your employer cannot pay less than SSP, and company sick pay counts towards it. This calculator shows the statutory minimum only.
