Zakat al-mal is due once a year on wealth that has stayed at or above the nisab for a full lunar year. This calculator adds up what you own, takes off debts due now, compares the result with the nisab and works out one fortieth of it.
The nisab. The nisab comes from the hadith: 20 mithqal of gold and 200 dirhams of silver. In grams this is usually given as 85 g of pure gold (a mithqal of 4.25 g) and 595 g of pure silver, the figures IslamWeb and Qatar Charity publish. The price of gold and silver changes every day, so the page asks you for today's price instead of guessing it.
| Nisab basis | Weight | Nisab at an example price |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | 85 g of 24 carat | AED 34,000 at AED 400 a gram |
| Silver | 595 g of pure silver | AED 2,975 at AED 5 a gram |
Gold or silver. The silver nisab is far lower, so more people reach it. Some scholars prefer it because it benefits the poor; others use gold because most savings today are held in money. The page lets you choose and shows the result on the other basis too.
What counts. Cash and bank balances, gold and silver (by their pure content: 21-carat gold is 21/24 gold), shares and funds, goods held for sale in a business, and money owed to you that you expect to be paid. Debts and bills due now come off. Your home, car and things for personal use are not counted.
Where scholars differ. Whether gold jewellery that is worn is zakatable; whether long-term debts such as a mortgage come off, or only the instalments due; and the karat of the gold nisab, which Egypt's Dar al-Ifta takes as 85 g of 21-carat gold. Some Hanafi bodies use 87.48 g and 612.36 g. This page is a guide to the common method, not a fatwa.

Add up cash, bank balances, gold, silver, investments, trade goods and money owed to you that you have held for a lunar year, subtract debts due now, and if the total reaches the nisab pay 2.5%, one fortieth. Net savings of AED 62,000 owe AED 1,550.
The nisab is 20 mithqal of gold and 200 dirhams of silver, usually given as 85 grams of pure gold and 595 grams of pure silver. Multiply the weight by today's price per gram: at AED 400 a gram of gold the gold nisab is AED 34,000.
Scholars differ. The silver nisab is much lower, so more people owe zakat and the poor benefit; others prefer gold because most wealth is now held as money. The calculator lets you pick one basis and shows what you would pay on the other.
Schools differ. The Hanafi school counts all gold, worn or not; the majority of Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali scholars exempt jewellery worn in a usual amount. Enter only the gold you believe is zakatable, and ask a scholar you trust if you are unsure.
Debts and bills due now are usually subtracted before comparing with the nisab. For long-term debts such as a mortgage, many scholars subtract only the instalments due in the coming year. The calculator subtracts whatever you enter in the debts box.
One fortieth, 2.5%, of AED 100,000 is AED 2,500, provided the money has been held for a full lunar year and your net wealth is at or above the nisab on the basis you follow. Add any gold, investments and trade goods to the same total first.
