Split a large site into numbered sitemaps with an index file
Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Updated on 24 Oct 2026.Past fifty thousand addresses, or fifty megabytes, a sitemap has to become several files with an index pointing at them. Paste the whole list and the split happens on both limits at once, counting real bytes rather than guessing. Give the site address as well and the index carries the full https:// location of each part, which is what search engines require.
Paste the full list of addresses into Your URLs; past 50,000 addresses or 50 MB it is split into numbered files.
Type the Site address so the index lists each file at its full https:// location.
Choose sitemap.xml under Output, press each numbered file chip and download it.
Choose Sitemap index under Output and download the index file.
Upload every file to the root of the site and submit only the index to search engines.
This sitemap generator takes a list of addresses and writes sitemap.xml exactly as the sitemaps.org protocol requires: the right namespace, children in the order loc, lastmod, changefreq and priority, ampersands escaped, and a sitemap index as soon as the list passes fifty thousand addresses or fifty megabytes.
It does not crawl your site, and it says so up front. The list has to come from somewhere else: a crawl export, your content management system, a database query or a page you wrote by hand. In return, nothing is uploaded and a list of unreleased URLs stays on your laptop.
You also get a plain text sitemap, which is one address per line and perfectly valid to submit. Related tools: Robots.txt Generator, for the Sitemap line that points at the file you just made.

No. It runs entirely in your browser and makes no network requests, so it cannot visit your site. Paste a list of addresses from a crawler export, your CMS or a database query. In exchange, a list of unpublished URLs never leaves your device.
Fifty thousand, and fifty megabytes uncompressed, whichever comes first. Past either limit you need several files and a sitemap index listing them. This tool counts real bytes and splits on both limits automatically.
Anywhere on the same host, though the root is the convention: https://example.com/sitemap.xml. A sitemap can only list addresses at or below its own folder, so a file in the root is simplest. Then add a Sitemap line to robots.txt and submit it in Search Console.
Yes, for most sites. A plain text file of one address per line, UTF-8, up to fifty thousand lines, is a valid sitemap format. You lose lastmod, which is the one field search engines actually use, so XML is worth it for a site that changes often.
