Fit a multi-page scan under 500 KB with its text still readable
Processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Updated on 24 Oct 2026.Five hundred kilobytes sits between the strict portals that stop at 100 KB and the relaxed ones that allow a whole megabyte, and it is where a five or six page scan usually lands without turning grey. The pictures inside the PDF are re-saved at lower resolutions, one step at a time, until the file fits; typed text and fonts are left exactly as they were. If no step reaches 500 KB, the smallest size achieved is reported rather than hidden.
Press Select PDF files and choose the multi-page scan; the target is set to 500 KB.
Press Compress and let each lower resolution be tried in turn.
If the row says Above target, the smallest size reached is shown instead of a failed file.
Press Download to save the PDF under 500 KB.
Compress PDF makes a PDF smaller by re-saving the photos and scanned pages inside it at a lower resolution and quality. You pick Smaller file, Balanced or Better quality, or type a target such as 200 KB, and you see the size before and after for every file along with the total saved.
People use it when an exam, bank or job portal rejects a scanned certificate for being too large, or when a report full of photos will not attach to an email. A ten-page phone scan of 12 MB often ends up around 2 to 5 MB on Balanced, which keeps the pages looking the same even zoomed in, or around 1 MB on Smaller file. A target-size run tries lighter settings step by step and keeps the best quality that fits; if nothing fits, it tells you the smallest size it reached.
How it works, and the trade-off: only pictures are re-encoded, as JPEG, capped at 100, 150 or 200 dots per inch of the page. Text, fonts, links and vector drawings are not touched, so words stay sharp, selectable and searchable, including the hidden text layer that scanner apps add. The cost is that a PDF made mostly of text barely shrinks, and images stored as black-and-white fax, JBIG2, CMYK or palette data are left as they are. If the result is not smaller, you get your original back, never a bigger file.
