List the bookmarks of a PDF with their page numbers and save them as text, CSV or JSON
Processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Checked against sources on 16 Oct 2026.PDF Bookmarks Extractor reads the outline of a PDF in your browser and lists every bookmark, indented by level, with the page it opens. The list saves as text, CSV, Markdown or JSON. PDFs up to 200 MB work, locked files ask for their password, and nothing is uploaded.
Press Select PDF or drop the file on the page; it is read on your device, and a locked file asks for its password.
The bookmarks appear at once, indented by level, with the page each one opens.
Under Save as, choose Text, CSV, Markdown or JSON.
Press Download, or Copy to paste the list into a document.
Bookmarks are the clickable outline in a PDF reader's sidebar. Long documents carry their whole structure there: the chapters of a book, the sections of a contract, the parts of a manual. Getting that structure out of the file is useful for a contents page, a study plan, a spreadsheet of sections to review, or a check that a combined PDF still points to the right pages.
What is read. A PDF's outline is a tree of items, each with a title and a destination. The page follows the PDF specification's rules for destinations: an explicit page, a named destination looked up in the file's name tree, or a GoTo action. A bookmark that opens a web address shows link instead of a page, and one whose destination is missing shows no page, exactly as a reader would fail to open it.
Four formats.
| Save as | Looks like | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Text | titles indented two spaces per level, page at the end | pasting into a document |
| CSV | Level, Title, Page | Excel and Google Sheets |
| Markdown | a nested list with (p. 12) | notes and documentation |
| JSON | a nested tree | scripts |
Titles keep their accents and symbols; bold bookmarks are shown in bold in the list.
Checked against real PDFs. The reader was tested on PDFs written byte by byte to the specification, with explicit, named, action and link destinations, and read with pdf.js, the same engine the page uses.
On your device. The file is opened in your browser and never uploaded. A password-protected PDF asks for its password first; nothing about the file is logged.
Drop the PDF on PDF Bookmarks Extractor. The outline is read in your browser and listed at once, indented by level, with the page number each bookmark opens. Choose Text, CSV, Markdown or JSON under Save as and press Download, or Copy to paste the list somewhere else.
Choose CSV under Save as and press Download. The file has three columns, Level, Title and Page, one row per bookmark in reading order, and opens directly in Excel or Google Sheets. Filtering on Level 1 gives the chapters alone; sorting is never needed because the order is the book's own.
Bookmarks are a separate outline stored in the file, not the contents page printed in the text. Many PDFs, especially scans and files printed to PDF, have none. The page says so when the outline is empty; PDF to Text can then read the printed contents page instead.
A bookmark points either to a page or to a named destination elsewhere in the file. When that destination is missing, which happens after pages are deleted or files are combined carelessly, a reader cannot open it either. Bookmarks that open a website show link instead of a page number.
Yes, if you know the password: the page asks for it, and the file is opened in your browser with it. A file that only restricts printing or copying opens without a password. The password is kept in memory for this page only and never sent anywhere.
No. The PDF is opened by pdf.js inside your own browser, and the bookmark list and the downloaded file are made on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so confidential reports and books stay private. Closing the tab clears the file from memory.
Rates and rules change; check the source before you rely on a figure.
