Split a PDF into one file per chapter, using its own bookmarks for the page ranges
Processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Checked against sources on 17 Oct 2026.Split PDF by Bookmarks reads a PDF's bookmarks in your browser and cuts it into one PDF per chapter, up to 500 parts from a file of up to 500 MB. Each part runs from its bookmark's page to the page before the next chapter and is named after it. Pages are copied unchanged, and nothing is uploaded.
Press Select a PDF and pick a document that has bookmarks; it is read on your device.
Check the chapters found, each with its page range, and choose the bookmark level to split at.
Press Split into chapters.
Download all the chapters in one zip, or each one from its row.
Most long PDFs, such as textbooks, manuals, annual reports and theses, carry an outline: the bookmarks in the sidebar that jump to each chapter. That outline already says where every chapter begins, so splitting by it needs no page numbers typed in.
How the cuts are made.
| Bookmarks | Result |
|---|---|
| Preface p.3, Chapter 1 p.4, Chapter 2 p.7, in a 9-page file | Preface 3, Chapter 1 4-6, Chapter 2 7-9 |
| Pages before the first bookmark (cover, contents) | An optional Front matter part, on by default |
| Two bookmarks on the same page (Chapter 1 and 1.1) | One part, titled with both |
| A bookmark that is a web link or has no page | Ignored |
| Bookmarks listed out of page order | Sorted by page |
Choose the depth. Level 1 splits at top-level chapters. Level 2 also splits at the sections inside them, and so on for as many levels as the outline has. The list of parts with their page ranges updates as you change it, before anything is made.
Names that sort. Each file is numbered and named after its bookmark, such as 03 Chapter 2.pdf, with characters that Windows or phones refuse replaced, so the folder lists the chapters in book order.
Quality. Pages are copied from the original, not printed again, so text stays selectable and searchable, and images keep their resolution. Links inside a chapter keep working.
No bookmarks? Some scanned books have none. Use Split PDF to cut by page ranges instead, or PDF Bookmarks to check what a file has.
Tested end to end: PDFs with outlines are split and every part is read back by pdf.js, page by page; 300 random outlines are checked against a page-by-page assignment. Nothing is uploaded.
Select the PDF on Split PDF by Bookmarks. Its bookmarks are read and the chapters appear with their page ranges. Press Split into chapters, and each chapter becomes its own PDF named after it. Download all saves them in one zip, numbered in book order.
Then there is nothing to split by, and the page says so. Use Split PDF to cut the file by page ranges you type, such as 1-12, 13-40, or every 10 pages. Many scanned books have no bookmarks, while most digital textbooks and manuals do.
Yes. Choose level 2 to split at every chapter and every section inside it, or a deeper level if the outline has one. The parts and their page ranges update at once, so you can see how many files you will get before splitting.
Pages before the first bookmark become a part called Front matter, so no page is lost. Turn off Keep front matter if you only want the chapters. A bookmark that is a web link rather than a page is ignored.
No. The pages are copied from the original PDF, not printed again, so text stays sharp, selectable and searchable, and pictures keep their resolution. Each chapter file holds only its own pages, so it is smaller than the whole book.
No. The PDF is read and split by your own browser, and the chapter files are saved from your device. Books, reports and notes never reach a server, and nothing is kept after you close the tab.
Rates and rules change; check the source before you rely on a figure.
