TAR.GZ Extractor opens the archives that Linux servers, developers and backup tools make, on any computer or phone, without installing 7-Zip or using a terminal. It reads a plain .tar, a .tar.gz or its short form .tgz, and a single .gz file, and also .tar.bz2, .tar.xz, RAR and 7z archives.
How it works. A .tar.gz is two layers. Gzip squeezes the bytes; tar inside packs many files into one. The page un-gzips with your browser's own decompressor, then reads the tar headers one 512-byte block at a time, as the POSIX standard lays them out. Long file names from GNU tar and from pax headers, accented and non-Latin names, and files larger than 8 GB are all read correctly.
RAR and 7z. RAR (versions 4 and 5), 7z, bzip2 and xz are read by libarchive, an open-source library, compiled to WebAssembly. Its reader, about 0.5 MB, is downloaded only when you open one of these files, and the sizes inside are checked before anything is unpacked. Password-protected RAR and 7z archives cannot be opened here, and the page says so.
What you get. A list of every file with its folder and size, a Download button for each, and Download all as ZIP, which keeps the folders so the zip has the same layout as the archive. A plain .gz is saved under its original name, read from the gzip header when the file name does not say it.
Safe by design. A path that tries to climb out of the folder with two dots, or starts at the root of a drive, is placed inside the folder instead, and the page says so. Symbolic links, hard links and device entries are listed but not copied, because a browser download cannot make them. A damaged or cut-short archive still gives every complete file before the damage.
Limits. Up to 1 GB as chosen and 2 GB unpacked for tar and gzip, and 512 MB as chosen and 1 GB unpacked for RAR, 7z, bzip2 and xz, with up to 20,000 entries, because the archive is held in the memory of the browser tab. Zstandard (.tar.zst) is not read yet; the page names the format it found instead of failing silently. Zip files open with Zip / Unzip.
Everything runs on your device and nothing is uploaded, so private backups, logs and database dumps stay with you.
Drop the file on this page and press Open archive. The browser un-gzips it, reads the tar inside and lists every file with its folder and size. Press Download beside a file to save one, or Download all as ZIP to save everything together.
A .tar packs many files into one without making them smaller. A .tar.gz, or its short form .tgz, is that tar squeezed with gzip. A plain .gz is usually one single file squeezed with gzip, such as a log or a database dump. All four open here.
Yes. Press Download all as ZIP, or use the TAR to ZIP page, which does it in one tap. Folders are kept, so the zip has the same layout as the archive. Symbolic and hard links cannot be stored in a zip, so they are listed rather than copied.
Yes. RAR (versions 4 and 5), 7z, .tar.bz2 and .tar.xz are read by libarchive compiled to WebAssembly, loaded only when you open one, up to 512 MB as chosen. Password-protected RAR and 7z archives and .tar.zst files cannot be opened here, and the page says so. Zip files open with Zip / Unzip.
Up to 1 GB as chosen, and up to 2 GB once unpacked, with at most 20,000 entries. The whole archive is held in the memory of the browser tab, so a phone may need a smaller file than a computer. A damaged or cut-short archive still gives every complete file before the damage.
No. The file is read and unpacked by your own browser on your device, and the zip is built there too. Nothing is sent to a server, so private backups and logs stay private. Paths that try to climb out of the folder with two dots are kept inside it.
