TAR to ZIP Converter

Turn a .tar, .tar.gz or .tgz into a zip that opens on any computer or phone

Processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Checked against sources on 16 Oct 2026.

Windows, phones and many upload forms open zip files but not tar.gz. This page reads the tar archive in your browser, keeps its folders, and writes the same files into a zip, so the result opens with a double-click on any computer. Symbolic links cannot be put in a zip and are listed instead.

How to convert a tar.gz to zip

1

Drop the .tar, .tar.gz or .tgz file on the page, or press Select an archive.

2

Press Convert to ZIP; the archive is opened and every file is packed into a zip, folders kept.

3

The zip downloads by itself when it is ready.

4

Open it with the built-in zip support on Windows, macOS, Android or iPhone, with no extra app.

How TAR to ZIP Converter works

TAR.GZ Extractor opens the archives that Linux servers, developers and backup tools make, on any computer or phone, without installing 7-Zip or using a terminal. It reads a plain .tar, a .tar.gz or its short form .tgz, and a single .gz file, and also .tar.bz2, .tar.xz, RAR and 7z archives.

How it works. A .tar.gz is two layers. Gzip squeezes the bytes; tar inside packs many files into one. The page un-gzips with your browser's own decompressor, then reads the tar headers one 512-byte block at a time, as the POSIX standard lays them out. Long file names from GNU tar and from pax headers, accented and non-Latin names, and files larger than 8 GB are all read correctly.

Limits. Up to 1 GB as chosen and 2 GB unpacked for tar and gzip, and 512 MB as chosen and 1 GB unpacked for RAR, 7z, bzip2 and xz, with up to 20,000 entries, because the archive is held in the memory of the browser tab. Zstandard (.tar.zst) is not read yet; the page names the format it found instead of failing silently. Zip files open with Zip / Unzip.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a tar.gz file without installing anything?

Drop the file on this page and press Open archive. The browser un-gzips it, reads the tar inside and lists every file with its folder and size. Press Download beside a file to save one, or Download all as ZIP to save everything together.

What is the difference between .tar, .tar.gz, .tgz and .gz?

A .tar packs many files into one without making them smaller. A .tar.gz, or its short form .tgz, is that tar squeezed with gzip. A plain .gz is usually one single file squeezed with gzip, such as a log or a database dump. All four open here.

Can I convert a tar.gz to a zip?

Yes. Press Download all as ZIP, or use the TAR to ZIP page, which does it in one tap. Folders are kept, so the zip has the same layout as the archive. Symbolic and hard links cannot be stored in a zip, so they are listed rather than copied.

Can it open .rar, .7z, .tar.bz2 and .tar.xz files?

Yes. RAR (versions 4 and 5), 7z, .tar.bz2 and .tar.xz are read by libarchive compiled to WebAssembly, loaded only when you open one, up to 512 MB as chosen. Password-protected RAR and 7z archives and .tar.zst files cannot be opened here, and the page says so. Zip files open with Zip / Unzip.
