This calculator estimates German parental allowance, Elterngeld, from the net income before the birth and any part-time income after it, following §§ 1, 2, 2a and 4a of the Bundeselterngeld- und Elternzeitgesetz (BEEG) and the federal Familienportal.
The replacement rate. Elterngeld is 67% of the net income lost. Below €1,000 the rate rises by 0.1 points for each 2 euros, up to 100%; above €1,200 it falls by the same steps to 65%, reached at €1,240. Most employees therefore get 65%.
Limits. Basiselterngeld is at least €300 and at most €1,800 a month. Income before the birth counts up to €2,770, which is why 65% of it tops out at €1,800.
ElterngeldPlus. Calculated the same way, but never more than half the Basiselterngeld you would get with no income after the birth, and paid for twice as many months. With part-time work it can equal Basiselterngeld: €2,000 before and €1,200 after gives €520 either way.
A worked example. €2,000 a month before the birth, no income after: 65% gives €1,300 a month of Basiselterngeld, €15,600 over 12 months, or €650 of ElterngeldPlus, €15,600 over 24 months.
Bonuses. The sibling bonus adds 10%, at least €75, when another child under three or two under six live with you. Twins add €300 a month, triplets €600. Both are halved for ElterngeldPlus.
What to type. The Elterngeldstelle works out its own Elterngeld-Netto from gross pay with flat deductions, so use your payslip net as an estimate. There is no claim above €175,000 of taxable income.
Not included. The gross-to-net step, Partnerschaftsbonus months, benefits offset against Elterngeld and self-employment. An estimate; the Elterngeldstelle decides.

Basiselterngeld is 65% to 100% of the net income lost after the birth, at least €300 and at most €1,800 a month. Most earners get 65%: €2,000 of net income before the birth and none after gives €1,300 a month, or €15,600 over 12 months, according to the Familienportal's example.
ElterngeldPlus is calculated like Basiselterngeld but capped at half of what Basiselterngeld would be with no income after the birth, and it is paid for twice as many months. Without part-time work it is exactly half: €650 for 24 months instead of €1,300 for 12.
With part-time income, Elterngeld replaces the rate of the difference between net income before and after the birth. €2,000 before and €500 after gives €975 Basiselterngeld, while ElterngeldPlus stays at its €650 cap. At €1,200 after the birth both pay €520, but ElterngeldPlus lasts twice as long.
Under § 2 BEEG the rate rises by 0.1 percentage points for each 2 euros of net income below €1,000, up to 100%. €998 earns 67.1% and €800 earns 77%, so €616 a month. Above €1,200 the rate falls by the same steps until it reaches 65% at €1,240.
The sibling bonus adds 10% to Elterngeld, at least €75 a month (€37.50 with ElterngeldPlus), when another child under three or two under six live in the household. Twins add €300 a month to Basiselterngeld and €150 to ElterngeldPlus, triplets twice that.
Yes. Under § 1 (8) BEEG there is no claim if the taxable income in the last tax year before the birth was above €175,000, for both parents together or for a single parent. Elterngeld itself is tax-free but raises the tax rate on other income (Progressionsvorbehalt).
