This calculator shows when maternity protection (Mutterschutz) starts and ends in Germany and what is paid during it, following the Mutterschutzgesetz (MuSchG) and § 24i of the Social Code V.
The protection periods (§ 3 MuSchG). An employer may not employ a pregnant woman in the last six weeks before the birth, unless she expressly declares she wants to work; she can withdraw that at any time. The six weeks are counted from the expected date in the doctor's or midwife's certificate. After the birth there is no work for eight weeks, or twelve weeks after a premature birth, a multiple birth, or when a disability of the child is certified within eight weeks and the mother applies. If the child comes early, the days lost before the birth are added after it, so the total stays the same. A later birth lengthens the period before.
The pay (§§ 19-21 MuSchG, § 24i SGB V). For every day of protection and the day of birth a woman in a statutory health fund receives Mutterschaftsgeld equal to her average net pay per calendar day of the last three settled months, at most 13 euros a day. The employer pays the difference above 13 euros as a top-up, so the net pay continues in full. A woman outside the statutory funds receives at most 210 euros in all from the Bundesamt für Soziale Sicherung, plus the same employer top-up.
Example. Due on 15 March 2027: protection from 1 February to 10 May 2027, 99 days. With 2,100 euros net a month, November to January have 92 days, so the daily net is 68.48 euros: 13.00 from the fund and 55.48 from the employer.
The calculator takes the three calendar months before the protection starts as the settled months. After the protection, Elterngeld usually follows: see the Germany Elterngeld Calculator.

Mutterschutz starts six weeks before the expected date of birth shown in the doctor's or midwife's certificate. For a due date of 15 March 2027 it starts on 1 February 2027. Until the birth you may still work if you expressly declare that you want to.
Mutterschutz lasts eight weeks after the birth, or twelve weeks after a premature birth, a multiple birth, or when a disability of the child is certified within eight weeks and you apply. Days lost before an early birth are added after it, so the total stays the same.
A member of a statutory health fund gets her average net pay per calendar day of the last three settled months, but at most 13 euros a day from the fund. The employer pays the rest as a top-up, so the full net pay continues for every day of protection.
Under § 20 MuSchG the employer pays the difference between 13 euros and the average net pay per calendar day of the last three settled months. With 2,100 euros net a month and 92 days in those months, that is 68.48 minus 13.00, so 55.48 euros a day.
A woman who is not a member of a statutory health fund receives Mutterschaftsgeld of at most 210 euros in all from the Bundesamt für Soziale Sicherung, on application. The employer top-up above 13 euros a day is paid in the same way as for statutory members.
A birth after the expected date lengthens the period before the birth by the extra days, and those days are still covered and paid. The eight or twelve weeks after the birth then start from the actual date of birth, so the protection ends later.
