Semester and cumulative GPA on the 4.0 scale, using your school's own grade table

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Updated on 24 Oct 2026.

GPA on the 4.0 scale is total quality points divided by total credit hours, where a course contributes its grade points multiplied by its credit hours. A B in a 3-hour class and an A in a 4-hour class give 25 quality points over 7 hours, or 3.57, not the 3.50 an unweighted average would suggest.

How to calculate GPA on a 4.0 scale

1

Pick your school's grade table under "Your school's grade table".

2

Enter each course with its Grade and Credit hours; press Add a course for more rows.

3

Tick Pass/fail for any course that does not count towards the GPA.

4

Read the Term GPA, the quality points and the working line by line underneath.

About the GPA Calculator

Two numbers decide an American GPA, and only two: the grade points of each course and the credit hours it carried. Multiply them for every course to get quality points, add them up, and divide by the total credit hours. A three-hour B and a four-hour A come to 25 quality points over 7 hours, which is 3.57 and not the 3.50 you get by averaging 3.0 and 4.0. That gap is the reason this page exists.

The grade table is a choice, not a fact. A+ is worth 4.0 at most American universities and 4.3 at some, a good many schools award no plus or minus at all, and each publishes its own table in its catalogue. Pick the one that matches yours and the maximum GPA moves with it.

Weighting is the same story. An honors course typically adds half a point and an AP, IB or dual enrolment course a full one, which is how a transcript ends up showing 4.3 on a four-point scale. Typically is doing a lot of work in that sentence: plenty of schools weight AP by half a point and some weight nothing. Both bonuses are boxes on this page, so the figure you get is the figure your school would print.

Three rows are never treated as a zero. A course with no grade yet is left out, because a blank is not an F. A pass/fail or audit course earns its credit hours but no grade points, which is how a real transcript handles it, so it is excluded from the division. A letter that does not exist on the chosen table is named rather than silently counted. Every skipped row says why, next to the row.

Cumulative GPA is not the average of your semester GPAs. Each term counts for the credit hours it carried, so a light term of straight A grades barely moves a transcript with ninety hours behind it. Enter the GPA already on record with its credit hours to see the real combined figure.

Latin honors thresholds are deliberately not shown. Cum laude, magna and summa are set by each institution and are often decided by class rank rather than a fixed GPA, so any number printed here would be a guess about your school.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated on the 4.0 scale?

Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points, add those up, and divide by the total credit hours. An A in a 4-hour course is 16 quality points; a B in a 3-hour course is 9. Together that is 25 over 7 hours, a GPA of 3.57.

Why is my GPA not the average of my grades?

Credit hours weight every course. A four-hour class counts a third more than a three-hour one, so a strong grade in a heavy course lifts the figure further than the same grade in a one-hour elective. Averaging the letters ignores that and usually gives a number a little too round to be real.

Is an A+ worth 4.0 or 4.3?

Both, depending on the school. Most American universities cap the scale at 4.0 and treat A+ and A identically; some award 4.3 for an A+, which lets an unweighted GPA pass 4.00. Pick the table printed in your own catalogue, because no calculator can know which one applies to you.

How much does an AP or honors class raise a weighted GPA?

Half a point for honors and a full point for AP, IB or dual enrolment is the commonest arrangement, but the school decides. Some weight AP by half a point, some weight nothing. Both bonuses are editable here, so the weighted figure matches the transcript your school will actually issue.

Does a pass/fail class affect my GPA?

No. A pass/fail or audit course earns its credit hours but carries no grade points, so it is left out of the division entirely. Mark the row as pass/fail and the credit hours stop counting in the average, exactly as a registrar would treat them.

What GPA do I need next semester to reach my target?

Enter the GPA you have, the credit hours behind it, the hours still to take and the target. The answer is the average those remaining hours must carry. Where that average is higher than the best grade your school awards, the page says the target is out of reach instead of printing a number above the scale.

Are my grades saved or sent anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Your course list stays on your own device, which matters because a grade sheet is a private record and there is no reason a calculator should ever need to see it on a server.
