Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers, simplified, with steps
Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Updated on 24 Oct 2026.A fraction calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides fractions and mixed numbers and simplifies the answer. Type 1 1/2 + 3/4 and the answer is 9/4, or 2 1/4, or 2.25, with each step of the working shown. Repeating decimals such as 0.(3) convert to 1/3 exactly. Free; nothing is uploaded.
Type the first number as a fraction (3/4), a mixed number (1 1/2), a whole number or a decimal.
Tap +, −, × or ÷ and type the second number.
Read the simplified answer, its mixed-number form, the decimal and every step of the working.
Switch to Decimal ↔ fraction to turn 0.375 or 0.(3) into a fraction, or a fraction into a decimal.
Rewrite both fractions over a common denominator, add the numerators, then simplify. For 1/2 + 1/3 the least common denominator is 6, so 1/2 becomes 3/6 and 1/3 becomes 2/6; adding the numerators gives 5/6. Subtraction works the same way with the numerators subtracted.
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together: 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2. To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply: 5/8 ÷ 5/4 = 5/8 × 4/5 = 20/40 = 1/2. Dividing by zero is undefined, and the calculator says so instead of giving a number.
A mixed number such as 2 1/3 is first turned into an improper fraction: 2 × 3 + 1 = 7, so 2 1/3 = 7/3. The minus sign belongs to the whole number, so −1 1/2 is −3/2. Answers greater than one are shown both ways, 9/4 and 2 1/4.
Write the digits over a power of ten and simplify: 0.375 = 375/1000 = 3/8. For a repeating decimal, put the repeating digits in brackets: 0.(3) is 1/3 and 0.1(6) is 1/6. The converter also works the other way, finding where the digits of 1/7 repeat (0.(142857)).
| Fraction | Decimal | Percent |
|---|---|---|
| 1/8 | 0.125 | 12.5% |
| 1/3 | 0.(3) | 33.33% |
| 3/4 | 0.75 | 75% |
| 5/6 | 0.8(3) | 83.33% |
Every number is held as an exact whole-number numerator and denominator, so the answers never pick up rounding errors, however large the numbers get. For decimals with powers and roots use the Scientific Calculator; for percentages, the Percentage Calculator.
Find the least common denominator, rewrite each fraction over it, add the numerators and simplify. For 3/4 + 1/6 the least common denominator is 12, so 3/4 = 9/12 and 1/6 = 2/12, and the sum is 11/12. The calculator shows each of these steps under the answer.
Divide the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common divisor. For 18/24 the greatest common divisor is 6, so 18/24 = 3/4. A fraction is in its simplest form when the top and bottom share no factor other than 1, as 5/6 does. The Decimal ↔ fraction tab simplifies any single fraction typed into it.
The decimal 0.375 is 3/8. Three decimal places means a denominator of 1000, so 0.375 = 375/1000, and dividing both by 125 gives 3/8. Other common ones: 0.25 is 1/4, 0.2 is 1/5, 0.125 is 1/8 and 0.6 is 3/5.
Type a mixed number with a space between the whole number and the fraction, such as 2 1/3, and a negative one as -2 1/3. Type a repeating decimal with the repeating digits in brackets: 0.(3) for 0.333… and 0.1(6) for 0.1666…. On pages that write a decimal comma, 0,75 works as well.
Turn both mixed numbers into improper fractions, flip the second and multiply. For 2 1/2 ÷ 1 1/4: 2 1/2 = 5/2 and 1 1/4 = 5/4, so 5/2 × 4/5 = 20/10 = 2. The working on the page lists the conversion, the flip, the multiplication and the simplification.
Yes. Every number is stored as an exact whole-number numerator and denominator, with no limit on the number of digits, so 1/3 + 1/6 is exactly 1/2 and no rounding happens until a decimal is shown. Repeating decimals are found by long division, and the rounded decimal is worked out from the exact fraction.
