Course grade from weighted categories, and the score you need on the final exam
Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Updated on 25 Oct 2026.A grade calculator weights each score by its category: with 85% on work worth 70% of the course and a final worth 30%, an 80% B overall needs 68.33% on the final, and a 90% A needs 101.67%, out of reach without extra credit. Type your own categories, weights and scores, or just your current grade.
Under Current grade, choose "Work it out from categories" or "I know it".
Enter each category's Weight % and Score, or type your grade right now.

Most syllabi split the course grade into categories, such as homework, quizzes, a midterm, a project and the final exam, each worth a set share. This calculator does the two sums students ask about most: what is my grade right now, and what do I need on the final.
Your grade now. Each category's score is multiplied by its weight, the products are added, and the total is divided by the weights that have a score. A category with no marks yet is left out instead of counting as zero, which is how most online grade books show a running grade. Scores can be typed as a percentage (92) or as points (45/50, or 18 of 20).
The final exam. With the final worth f of the course, the score needed is (target − current × (1 − f)) ÷ f. The page shows it for the grade you chose and for every letter on the scale, and also what your grade becomes for any exam score you try. A needed score above 100% means the target cannot be reached without extra credit; zero or below means it is already secure.
The letter scale is a common one, not the rule. The default is A from 90, B from 80, C from 70 and D from 60, a common US scale, with a plus and minus version (A- from 90, B+ from 87, A from 93) as another common choice. Your syllabus decides, so every boundary can be edited.
What it does not do. It does not drop the lowest quiz, curve a class or count a category of points without weights; enter those as your teacher computes them. It also does not work out a GPA; for the 4.0 scale across several courses use the GPA Calculator. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Multiply each category score by its weight, add the results and divide by the total weight of the categories that have a score. Homework at 92% worth 20% and a midterm at 78% worth 25% give (20 × 92 + 25 × 78) ÷ 45 = 84.22%. The calculator does the same for up to 30 categories.
Subtract your current grade times the share of the course already done from the target, then divide by the final's weight. At 85% with a final worth 30%, a B at 80% needs (80 − 85 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 68.33%. The page lists the score needed for every letter on your scale.
Yes. Type a score as 45/50, 45 / 50 or 18 of 20 and the calculator converts it to a percentage before weighting. Percentages can be typed as 92 or 92%. Scores above 100, from extra credit, are accepted. A category left empty is treated as not graded yet, never as zero.
Categories without a score yet are simply left out, and the grade is the weighted average of the ones that have marks. Enter the final exam's weight separately in the final exam box. When the category weights plus the final add up to something other than 100%, the page says so, because a syllabus weight was probably missed.
A common US scale by default: A from 90%, B from 80%, C from 70%, D from 60% and F below. A plus and minus version is one tap away, with A- from 90, B+ from 87 and A+ from 97. Schools differ, so every boundary can be changed to match your syllabus.
No. A course grade is a weighted percentage inside one class, while a GPA averages letter grades across classes on a 4.0 scale, weighted by credit hours. Once you know your letter grades, the GPA Calculator on this site turns them into a term and cumulative GPA.
