Statutory redundancy is the minimum lump sum an employer in Ireland must pay an employee whose job ends through redundancy. This page follows Citizens Information and the Department of Social Protection's worked examples on gov.ie.
The formula. You get two weeks' pay for every year of service plus one additional week's pay. The weekly pay used is your gross pay before tax and PRSI, with regular bonuses and allowances, and it is capped at €600 a week, which is €31,200 a year.
Counting the service. gov.ie's examples count the days from your start date to your end date, both included, and split them into 365-day years. The years are rounded to 2 decimals before the weeks are worked out. Joe, who worked from 27 January 1998 to 1 March 2021, had 23 years and 40 days, which is 23.11 years and 47.22 weeks: €28,332 at €600 a week.
What does not count. Service before your 16th birthday is excluded. In the last 3 years of the job, lay-off, strikes, illness over 26 weeks in a row and work injury over 52 weeks are taken off. Holidays, ordinary sick leave and family leave still count. Type the excluded days under More options.
Who qualifies. You need at least 104 weeks of service with the employer. Monthly pay is divided by 4.33 to find the weekly pay.
Tax. The statutory redundancy payment is tax-free.
Not included. Working out your weekly pay from overtime, shift work, short time or reduced hours; notice pay; and any top-up above the statutory amount, which may be taxed. An estimate, not legal advice.

Statutory redundancy is two weeks' pay for every year of service plus one extra week's pay, with weekly pay capped at €600. Service is counted in days and turned into years to 2 decimals, so 12 years and 273 days is 12.75 years, 26.5 weeks and €15,900 at the cap.
No overall maximum applies, but the weekly pay used is capped at €600, or €31,200 a year. Each year of service is therefore worth at most €1,200, plus a single bonus week of €600. Twenty years of service at the cap pays €24,600.
At least 2 years, or 104 weeks, of service with the same employer. Service before your 16th birthday does not count, and lay-off, strikes and long absences in the last 3 years are taken off. Under 104 weeks, no statutory redundancy payment is due.
Only absences in the last 3 years of employment: lay-off, strike, any period of illness over 26 weeks in a row and any period of work injury over 52 weeks. Holidays, ordinary sick leave, maternity, adoptive, paternity and parental leave and career breaks still count as service.
No. The statutory redundancy payment is tax-free. A larger lump sum paid as compensation for losing your job may be partly tax-free, and Revenue explains whether parts such as pay in lieu of notice are taxable. This calculator shows the statutory amount only.
Monthly gross pay is divided by 4.33, as gov.ie's guidance on the gross weekly wage says. A monthly salary of €3,000 is about €692.84 a week, which is above the €600 ceiling, so €600 is used. Regular bonuses and allowances are averaged into the pay.
