Employees in Ireland are entitled to 5 days of statutory sick pay in a calendar year. The entitlement rose from 3 days to 5 on 1 January 2024, and in April 2025 the government confirmed it stays at 5 rather than rising to 7 or 10.
Statutory sick pay is 70% of your normal pay for a day, up to €110 a day, paid by your employer. On €750 a week over 5 days your normal day is €150, so sick pay is €105 a day. Overtime and commission are left out of the daily pay.
The €110 daily cap applies once 70% of your normal daily pay is more than €110, which happens above about €157.14 a day. For a five-day week that is a weekly wage above roughly €785.71, or a yearly salary of about €40,857 or more.
Employees qualify after 13 weeks of continuous service with their employer, for days they would normally work but cannot because of illness or injury. Each sick day needs a medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner. Part-time and hourly workers qualify on the same terms.
After the 5 days, the employer does not have to pay statutory sick pay for the rest of the calendar year. Employees can then claim Illness Benefit from the Department of Social Protection if they have enough social insurance contributions. A company scheme may pay more.
For hourly workers the daily pay is the hourly rate times the hours they were due to work that day, and sick pay is 70% of it up to €110. At €16 an hour for an 8-hour day, normal pay is €128 and statutory sick pay is €89.60.
