Under "State", pick "Special category" for states such as Uttarakhand or the North-East, otherwise "Most states".
Enter the "Panel capacity (DC)" in kW; the subsidy stops growing after 3 kW.
Read the estimated "Central subsidy (CFA)" and check it against the scheme portal before you apply.
Open "How the subsidy adds up" to see the rate per kW for each slab.
Nothing extra is paid beyond 3 kW. Enter your size and quote to see the subsidy, the net cost and the payback.
This calculator works out the central subsidy a household receives for a grid-connected rooftop solar system under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, and then how long the rest of the cost takes to recover from lower electricity bills.
The subsidy is fixed in rupees, not a share of your price. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's operational guidelines (Office Memorandum of 7 June 2024, para 5(h)) set the central financial assistance at ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 per kW for the next 1 kW, with nothing more above 3 kW. Part of a kW counts pro rata, so 2.5 kW earns ₹69,000. In the special category states and UTs, which are Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, the North-East including Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar, and Lakshadweep, the rates are ₹33,000 and ₹19,800. The size that counts is the DC capacity of the panels, not the inverter.
The calculator does not include state top-up subsidies, the group housing (RWA) subsidy, loan interest, panel wear over the years, maintenance, or future tariff changes. Apply and check your eligibility on the national portal, pmsuryaghar.gov.in.

A 3 kW home system gets ₹78,000 of central subsidy in most states: ₹30,000 for each of the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third. In special category states and UTs the same system gets ₹85,800. Anything above 3 kW receives no extra central subsidy, though some states add their own.
MNRE's guidelines name Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, the North-Eastern states including Sikkim, and the UTs of Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep. Households there receive ₹33,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹19,800 for the third, about 10% more than elsewhere.
Panel size. The guidelines say the subsidy follows the rated DC capacity of the solar modules, whatever the inverter rating. A 3.3 kW panel array on a 3 kW inverter is paid as 3 kW because of the cap, and a 2.5 kW array on a 3 kW inverter is paid as 2.5 kW.
Units your home uses replace units you would have bought at your full tariff. Surplus units sent to the grid are settled under your state commission's net-metering or net-billing order, often at a lower rate. Enter the rate on your DISCOM's order in the export box; the calculator values each kind of unit separately.
