The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is the Government of India's pension scheme for workers without a pension of their own. A subscriber picks a monthly pension of ₹1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000 or 5,000, pays a fixed contribution until age 60, and then receives that pension for life. The Central Government guarantees the pension as a minimum.
This calculator looks up your contribution in Annex-1 of the Ministry of Finance notification of 16 October 2015, the official chart, for any joining age from 18 to 40 and for monthly, quarterly or half-yearly payment. It then shows how many years you pay, the total you pay by 60, and the corpus returned to your nominee. It is free, runs in your browser, and sends nothing anywhere.
The notification describes three benefits. You receive the chosen pension every month from 60 until death. After your death, your spouse receives the same pension for life. After both of you, your nominee receives the pension wealth built up by age 60, shown in the chart as ₹1.7 lakh for each ₹1,000 of pension, so ₹8.5 lakh for ₹5,000.
Any Indian citizen aged 18 to 40 with a savings account at a bank or post office. From 1 October 2022, anyone who is or has been an income-tax payer cannot join. The account is opened through your bank or post office, or online through your bank, and contributions are auto-debited from that account.
Banks collect an overdue charge for each month a contribution is late: Re 1 on a contribution up to ₹100, ₹2 up to ₹500, ₹5 up to ₹1,000 and ₹10 above that. The charge stays in your pension account.
It estimates from the published chart; it does not open an account or decide eligibility, which the bank, PFRDA and the Government do. It does not project a pension above the guaranteed minimum, and it ignores the Government co-contribution, which applied only to subscribers who joined in 2015-16.
This page is the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) calculator: it shows the monthly, quarterly or half-yearly contribution for a pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 a month from age 60, for joining ages 18 to 40. Joining at 18, a ₹5,000 pension costs ₹210 a month. Annual percentage yield on savings is a different APY, worked out by the Savings Calculator in the Money section.
A ₹5,000 monthly pension costs ₹210 a month if you join at 18, ₹376 at 25, ₹577 at 30, ₹902 at 35 and ₹1,454 at 40, according to the Government chart. The amount is fixed on the day you join and is paid every month until you turn 60.
No. From 1 October 2022, any citizen who is or has been an income-tax payer is not eligible to join APY, according to PFRDA. The rule covers anyone who has ever paid income tax, not only this year. Your bank asks about income tax on the registration form and the scheme decides eligibility.
Slightly. At 30, a ₹5,000 pension costs ₹577 a month, ₹1,720 a quarter or ₹3,405 a half-year. Over 30 years that is ₹2,07,720 monthly, ₹2,06,400 quarterly and ₹2,04,300 half-yearly. The Government chart prices each frequency separately, and the calculator shows all three.
After both the subscriber and the spouse have died, the nominee receives the pension wealth built up until the subscriber turned 60. The official chart puts this at ₹1.7 lakh for a ₹1,000 pension, rising in step to ₹8.5 lakh for ₹5,000, and labels those figures indicative.
Banks collect an overdue charge for every month a contribution is late: Re 1 on a monthly contribution up to ₹100, ₹2 from ₹101 to ₹500, ₹5 from ₹501 to ₹1,000, and ₹10 above ₹1,000. The charge is added to your pension account. Ask your bank for its current charges.
Yes, as a minimum. The Central Government guarantees the chosen pension from age 60 until death, then the same amount to the spouse. If the invested contributions earn more than needed, the pension can be higher. This calculator works only from the published chart and does not project any higher amount.
