CSV to Excel

Turn CSV files into a tidy Excel workbook with real numbers

Processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Updated on 24 Oct 2026.

A CSV opened straight in Excel mangles dates and drops leading zeros from anything that looks like a number. Converting properly makes a real workbook, with numbers as numbers and text left alone. Up to 20 files of 50 MB each, on your own machine.

Next:
  • Save the sheet as PDF Print a spreadsheet to PDF that fits the page, header on every page
  • Split the sheets apart Save each sheet as its own .xlsx, or cut one sheet into files by rows or column value

How to convert CSV to Excel

1

Press Select CSV files and choose one or more CSV files; each becomes its own sheet.

2

Leave Delimiter on Detect, or pick Comma, Semicolon or Pipe if the preview looks wrong.

3

Keep First row is a header and Detect numbers and dates on; leading zeros stay as typed.

4

Press Download .xlsx to save the workbook, built on your device.

About CSV to Excel

CSV to Excel turns CSV and TSV files into a proper .xlsx workbook. Each file becomes its own sheet, the header row is bold and frozen so it stays visible while you scroll, columns are sized to fit their contents, and numbers are stored as numbers, so SUM, filters and charts work straight away.

People use it for bank and card statements downloaded as CSV, exports from Shopify, Tally, Zoho or Google Forms, and data files from a colleague's script. Opening a CSV directly in Excel often goes wrong: leading zeros vanish from PIN codes and phone numbers, long account numbers turn into 1.23E+15, and semicolon files land in a single column. Here the delimiter is detected for you (comma, semicolon, tab or pipe), numbers with leading zeros or more than 15 digits stay exactly as typed, ISO dates such as 2024-01-15 become real dates, and percentages become percentages. Text that begins with an equals sign stays text; nothing is ever turned into a formula.

The conversion runs in your browser, so the files are never uploaded. Up to 20 files of 50 MB each, and up to Excel's own limit of 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns per sheet. Files saved by older Excel versions in Windows-1252 rather than UTF-8 are recognised and read correctly, so accents survive.

Regional dates such as 03/04/2024 are left as text on purpose, because they mean March in one country and April in another. Switch off type detection to keep every cell as the exact text in the file. To go the other way, Excel to CSV saves any sheet as CSV.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CSV to Excel for free?

Drop one or more .csv files on the page. The delimiter is detected, a preview shows the first rows, and Download .xlsx gives you a workbook with one sheet per file. No signup, no upload, and no Excel needed to make the file.

Why do leading zeros disappear when I open a CSV in Excel?

Excel guesses that 007 or 0612 is a number and drops the zeros. This converter keeps any value with a leading zero, and any number longer than 15 digits, as text exactly as typed, so PIN codes, phone numbers and account numbers survive.

Can I combine several CSV files into one Excel workbook?

Yes. Add all the CSV files at once and each becomes its own sheet in a single .xlsx, named after the file. Sheet names are cleaned to Excel's rules: at most 31 characters, no slashes or brackets, and no duplicates.

My CSV uses semicolons. Will it work?

Yes. The delimiter is detected automatically from commas, semicolons, tabs and pipes, and the detected one is shown. If a file is read wrongly, pick the delimiter yourself and the preview updates at once.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The CSV is read and the workbook is built by code running in your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so statements and customer lists stay private, and the page works offline once loaded.

What are the limits?

Up to 20 files of 50 MB each, and Excel's own sheet limits of 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns. Regional dates like 03/04/2024 stay as text because they are ambiguous; ISO dates such as 2024-01-15 become real dates.
