Next:
  • Compress the image Shrink JPG, PNG and WebP with a live before and after preview
  • Resize the image Resize by pixels or percent, with presets for passport photos and social media
  • Convert the image JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, ICO, SVG and HEIC, converted on your device

How to calculate photo print size from pixels and DPI

1

Under Work out, choose Print size from pixels, Pixels for a print, or DPI at a print size.

2

Fill in the two figures you know: the width and height in pixels, the print width and height, or the DPI.

3

Pick cm, mm or inches for the print size, or tap a Print size such as Passport 35×45 mm or 4×6 in.

4

Read the answer as it updates, and press Share result to copy a link with these numbers.

About the Photo Size Calculator

Pixels, print size and DPI are tied by one rule: pixels = inches × DPI. This page takes any two and gives the third, in centimetres, millimetres and inches, as you type.

Print size from pixels. Enter the width and height in pixels and the DPI. A 4,000 by 3,000 pixel phone photo at 300 DPI prints 33.87 by 25.4 cm, which is 13.33 by 10 inches.

Pixels for a print. Enter the print size, or tap a preset: passport 35 × 45 mm, 2 × 2 inch, 4 × 6 inch or A4. At 300 DPI these need 413 × 531, 600 × 600, 1,200 × 1,800 and 2,480 × 3,508 pixels. Pixels are rounded to the nearest whole pixel, the same way Resize Image rounds its presets.

DPI at a print size. Enter the pixels and the size you want to print. The DPI across and down are both shown; when the photo and the print are different shapes, the lower one is what the print gets, and the page says the print will be cropped or bordered.

How much DPI is enough. 300 DPI is the usual target for photo prints and ID photos held in the hand, and it is the default here. 200 to 299 still looks good in most prints, 150 to 199 suits posters seen from a metre or more, and below 150 the pixels may show up close. These are guidelines, not rules: when a form or a print shop names a DPI, use theirs.

What it does not do. No photo is opened or changed here. To make a photo a given pixel size, use Resize Image; to check what a form asks for, read its notice. The DPI stored inside a JPG file does not change how many pixels it has, so this page works from the pixels alone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert pixels to cm?

Divide the pixels by the DPI to get inches, then multiply by 2.54. At 300 DPI, 600 pixels are 2 inches, which is 5.08 cm. Enter the width and height in pixels and the DPI, and both sides appear in centimetres, millimetres and inches.

How many pixels is a 35 x 45 mm passport photo?

At 300 DPI a 35 by 45 mm photo is 413 by 531 pixels: 35 mm is 1.378 inches, and 1.378 times 300 is 413. Tap the passport preset in Pixels for a print to see it, or change the DPI if a form asks for another figure.

How many pixels do I need for a 4 x 6 inch print?

A 4 by 6 inch print at 300 DPI needs 1,200 by 1,800 pixels, about 2.2 megapixels. At 200 DPI, 800 by 1,200 pixels is enough for a print that still looks good in the hand. Almost any phone photo has more than either.

What DPI is good for printing a photo?

Around 300 DPI is the usual target for photos and ID prints held at reading distance. Prints between 200 and 299 DPI look good in most cases, 150 to 199 suits posters seen from further away, and under 150 the pixels may show when looked at closely.

Does changing the DPI in a file make the photo sharper?

No. The DPI number stored in a JPG only suggests a print size; the pixels stay the same. Sharpness in print depends on how many pixels cover each inch, which is why this calculator works from the pixels and the print size alone.

Can the calculator resize my photo?

No. The calculator only works out numbers and never opens a picture. Once you know the pixels you need, Resize Image makes the photo that size, with presets for passport, 2 by 2 inch and A4, all inside your browser.
