Federal tax. The lowest federal rate fell from 15% to 14% (14.5% for 2025 as a whole, 14% from 2026). The 2026 brackets are 14% up to $58,523, 20.5% to $117,045, 26% to $181,440, 29% to $258,482 and 33% above. Tax is reduced by credits at 14% on the basic personal amount ($16,452, falling to $14,829 for high incomes), the Canada employment amount ($1,501), base CPP and EI.
Provincial tax. Ontario is the default, with its surtax, the Ontario tax reduction, the LIFT credit for low earners and the Ontario Health Premium of up to $900. British Columbia uses the 5.60% lowest rate set by Budget 2026 for the whole year and the BC tax reduction of up to $690. Alberta starts at 8% and has a $22,769 basic personal amount.
CPP, CPP2 and EI. CPP is 5.95% of earnings between $3,500 and $74,600, at most $4,230.45. CPP2 adds 4% between $74,600 and $85,000, at most $416. EI is 1.63% up to $68,900, at most $1,123.07. The enhanced part of CPP and all of CPP2 are deducted from income; the base part and EI are credits.
What it leaves out. Quebec, the other provinces and the territories are not modelled. Only the basic credits are claimed, so RRSP contributions, union dues, childcare, tuition and medical expenses would all lower the tax. Refundable benefits such as the Canada Workers Benefit are not included, and neither are employer contributions. Payroll withholding during the year can differ from this annual figure. Treat the result as a planning estimate.
Federal tax for 2026 is 14% on taxable income up to $58,523, 20.5% up to $117,045, 26% up to $181,440, 29% up to $258,482 and 33% above. The 14% lowest rate replaces the old 15%; for 2025 as a whole the rate was 14.5%, because the cut took effect on 1 July 2025.
Employees pay CPP of 5.95% on earnings between $3,500 and $74,600, at most $4,230.45, plus CPP2 of 4% on earnings between $74,600 and $85,000, at most $416. EI premiums are 1.63% of earnings up to $68,900, at most $1,123.07. Employers pay a matching CPP and 1.4 times the EI.
Ontario residents with taxable income above $20,000 pay a health premium through their income tax. The premium rises in phased steps from $0 at $20,000 to the maximum of $900 a year at taxable income above $200,600. Payroll withholding includes it, so most employees never pay it separately.
British Columbia's Budget 2026 raised the lowest provincial rate from 5.06% to 5.60% for the whole 2026 tax year, and raised the credit rate and the BC tax reduction, now up to $690, to soften it for lower incomes. Pay cheques used the old rate until July, so 2026 withholding can fall short of the tax on the return.
No. The federal basic personal amount is $16,452 for net income up to $181,440, then shrinks in a straight line to $14,829 at $258,482 and above. Provinces set their own: $12,989 in Ontario, $13,216 in British Columbia and $22,769 in Alberta for 2026. Each credit is worth the lowest tax rate times the amount.
Quebec, the other provinces and the territories are not modelled. Only the basic personal amount, Canada employment amount, CPP and EI credits are claimed, so RRSP contributions, union dues, childcare, tuition and medical expenses are left out, and each would lower the tax. Refundable benefits and employer contributions are not shown.
