About the Quebec Sales Tax Calculator

This calculator adds the two sales taxes charged in Québec to a price, or takes them out of a total that already includes them, with the TPS and the TVQ each on its own line, rounded to the cent.

The two taxes. The TPS (taxe sur les produits et services, the federal GST) is 5 %. The TVQ (taxe de vente du Québec) is 9.975 %. Both are calculated on the price before taxes: the TVQ is not charged on the TPS. Together they make 14.975 %, the rate Revenu Québec gives for a calculation in one step. The Canada Revenue Agency lists the same two rates for Québec.

From a price to the total. TPS = price × 5 %, TVQ = price × 9.975 %, each rounded to the cent, with half a cent or more rounding up. A price of 50 $ gives 2.50 $ of TPS, 4.99 $ of TVQ and 57.49 $ in all; 1,000 $ gives 1,149.75 $.

From a total to the price. Divide the total by 1.14975 for both taxes, or by 1.05 for the TPS alone. A total of 114.98 $ holds a price of 100 $. Because each tax is rounded, a total can be a cent away from the exact division; the calculator then gives that cent to the price so the three lines always add up to the total you typed, and says so.

TPS only. The second choice under Taxes shows a sale on which only the 5 % TPS applies. The calculator does not decide which goods are taxable, zero-rated or exempt: Revenu Québec and the Canada Revenue Agency publish those rules.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate TPS and TVQ in Québec?

Multiply the price before taxes by 5 % for the TPS and by 9.975 % for the TVQ, round each to the cent, and add both to the price. A price of 100 $ gives 5.00 $ of TPS and 9.98 $ of TVQ, so the total is 114.98 $.

Is the TVQ calculated on the TPS?

No. The TVQ of 9.975 % applies to the price excluding the TPS, so the two taxes are calculated side by side on the same price. Revenu Québec gives 14.975 % as the combined rate when both are worked out in one step.

How do I remove the taxes from a total in Québec?

Divide the total by 1.14975 to find the price before taxes, then take 5 % and 9.975 % of that price for the TPS and the TVQ. A total of 57.49 $ holds a price of 50 $, 2.50 $ of TPS and 4.99 $ of TVQ.

What is the sales tax rate in Québec in 2026?

Québec has two sales taxes in 2026: the federal TPS at 5 % and the provincial TVQ at 9.975 %, for 14.975 % in all on a taxable sale. The Canada Revenue Agency's rate table lists the same two figures for the province.

How much tax is there on 1,000 $ in Québec?

A purchase of 1,000 $ before taxes carries 50.00 $ of TPS and 99.75 $ of TVQ, so 149.75 $ of tax and a total of 1,149.75 $. Working the other way, a total of 1,149.75 $ divided by 1.14975 gives back exactly 1,000 $.

How are TPS and TVQ rounded?

Each tax is rounded to the nearest cent, and a fraction of 0.005 $ or more goes up to the next cent, as Revenu Québec explains for cash registers. On 100 $, the TVQ of 9.975 $ therefore becomes 9.98 $.
