When a withdrawal is tax-free. Under paragraph 8 of Schedule XI to the Income-tax Act, 2025, the balance is left out of your income if you served five years or more continuously, counting earlier jobs whose PF was transferred in; if the job ended because of ill-health, the employer's business closing or shrinking, or another cause beyond your control; or if the balance moves to your new employer's fund or to NPS.
When it is taxed. Otherwise your tax for the years concerned is worked out again as if the fund had never been recognised. The employer's contributions and their interest become salary, the interest on your own contributions becomes income from other sources, and any deduction you claimed for your own contributions is taken back.
The TDS. Section 392(7), which replaced section 192A from 1 April 2026, makes EPFO deduct 10% of the payment when it is ₹50,000 or more and taxable. Without a PAN, section 397 raises this to 20%. Formula, in plain text: TDS = payment × 10% (or 20%), when payment ≥ ₹50,000.
Form 121. From 1 April 2026 Form 121 replaced Forms 15G and 15H. If the tax on your estimated income for the year is nil, giving it stops the TDS. It needs a PAN, and below 60 it does not apply when the payment exceeds the income on which no tax is charged; this page uses ₹4,00,000, the new regime's nil slab (₹2,50,000 under the old regime).
What it does not do. It does not work out the final tax for each earlier year, the EPS pension withdrawal, or rules for non-residents. TDS is credited against your tax when you file. An estimate, not tax advice.
Usually yes. Before five years of continuous service the balance is taxed as if the fund had never been recognised, unless the job ended through ill-health, the business closing or another cause beyond your control, or the money moved to a new employer's PF. Earlier jobs count towards the five years when their PF was transferred.
EPFO deducts 10% of the whole payment when it is ₹50,000 or more and taxable, under section 392(7) of the Income-tax Act, 2025, which replaced section 192A. Without a PAN the rate is 20%. A ₹2,00,000 withdrawal after three years loses ₹20,000, and ₹1,80,000 reaches your account.
No. Section 392(7) applies only when the payment is ₹50,000 or more, so ₹49,999 is paid without TDS. The amount can still be taxable: if service was under five years, report the taxable part in your return and pay any tax due on it there.
From 1 April 2026 Form 121 replaced Forms 15G and 15H. EPFO accepts it when the tax on your estimated income for the year is nil. A PAN is required. Below 60 it does not apply once the payment exceeds the income on which no tax is charged, ₹4,00,000 under the new regime.
When the withdrawal is taxable, the employer's contributions and the interest on them count as salary, and the interest on your own contributions as income from other sources. Your own contributions are taxed again only to the extent you claimed a deduction for them earlier. Enter the passbook split to see each part.
No. TDS is an advance payment set against your tax when you file your return. The final tax is worked out year by year for the years you contributed, and may be more or less than the TDS. A refund comes through the return when too much was deducted.
