Employee and employer ESI contribution from monthly wages, with the ₹21,000 coverage check
Estimates only, not financial advice. What you type stays on your device. Checked against sources on 30 Oct 2026.ESI costs the employee 0.75% and the employer 3.25% of monthly wages, each rounded up to the next rupee, for wages up to ₹21,000 a month. On ₹18,000 the employee pays ₹135 and the employer ₹585, a total of ₹720. Employees earning ₹176 a day or less pay nothing.
Rates and rules read from the sources listed on this page (the earliest on 30 Oct 2026); they may have changed since.
Enter the "Gross wages, without overtime" for one month.
Add any "Overtime paid this month"; it is charged ESI but left out of the coverage test.
Set the "Days the wages were paid for" so the daily average wage can be checked for the exemption.
Read Employee pays, Employer pays and the total; the rates and wage limit are ESIC's, listed under Sources.
The Employees' State Insurance scheme is paid for by a monthly contribution from both the employee and the employer. This calculator takes one month's wages and shows each share, the total, the six-month figure and whether the wage falls inside the scheme at all.
The rates. Since 1 July 2019 the employee pays 0.75% of wages and the employer 3.25%, as ESIC's contribution page states. Each share is rounded up to the next whole rupee, which is why ₹15,000 gives ₹113 and ₹488 rather than ₹112.50 and ₹487.50: ₹601 for the month in all.
Who is covered. An employee whose wages are ₹21,000 a month or less, a limit in force since 1 January 2017. Overtime is left out of this test but is charged: wages of ₹20,000 plus ₹2,000 overtime stay covered, and the contribution is worked on ₹22,000. If wages rise above ₹21,000 after a contribution period has started (the periods run April to September and October to March), the employee stays covered and keeps contributing on the full wage until that period ends. Tick the box for that case.
Low earners. When the daily average wage is ₹176 or less, the employee pays nothing, but the employer still pays 3.25%. The daily average is the month's wages divided by the days they were paid for, so enter the days paid.
What this does not do. It does not apply the separate rules for persons with disability: ESIC's pages give a ₹25,000 limit in one place and no limit in another, and the employer's share for them is reimbursed for up to ten years, so check with ESIC. It does not decide which allowances count as wages under the Code on Social Security, 2020; enter the gross figure your payroll uses. It does not cover interest or damages for late payment.
The ₹21,000 limit has been under review; this page will change when a new one is notified.
The employee pays 0.75% of wages and the employer pays 3.25%, a total of 4%. These rates have applied since 1 July 2019 and are the figures on ESIC's contribution page. Each share is rounded up to the next rupee, so ₹15,000 of wages gives ₹113 from the employee and ₹488 from the employer.
ESI covers employees whose wages, leaving out overtime, are ₹21,000 a month or less. The limit has applied since 1 January 2017 and was unchanged on 30 October 2026, though a higher figure has been discussed. Anyone who joins above the limit is outside the scheme and pays nothing.
Coverage continues until the end of the current contribution period, either 30 September or 31 March, and ESI is deducted on the full wages until then. From the next period the employee is outside the scheme. Tick the box on the calculator to see the contribution for that remaining stretch.
An employee whose daily average wage is ₹176 or less is exempt from the 0.75% share. The daily average is the wages for the period divided by the days they were paid for. The employer still pays its 3.25% for these employees, so ESI is not free for the business.
Overtime is included when working out the contribution but left out when deciding whether the employee is covered. So wages of ₹20,000 with ₹2,000 of overtime remain inside the ₹21,000 limit, and ESI is charged on ₹22,000: ₹165 from the employee and ₹715 from the employer.
No. ESIC's pages give a ₹25,000 limit for persons with disability in one place and say there is no limit in another, and the employer's share for them is reimbursed by the government for up to ten years. Confirm the treatment with ESIC or your branch office.
