This calculator takes a Japanese salary for 2026 from nenshu, the gross yearly pay, to tedori, the take-home pay. It is set up for a single full-time employee in Tokyo insured with Kyōkai Kenpo, with no dependants and no bonus.
Social insurance first. The employee pays half of each premium: health insurance at 9.85% in Tokyo from March 2026, the new child and child-rearing support levy of 0.23% from April 2026, and employees' pension at 18.3%, so 9.15%. Premiums stop growing at the top grades, ¥650,000 a month for pension and ¥1,390,000 for health. Employment insurance is 0.5% of pay from April 2026. Employees aged 40 to 64 add half of the 1.62% care premium.
Income tax uses the 2026 reform. The employment income deduction now starts at ¥740,000 and the basic deduction is ¥1,040,000 for total income up to ¥4.89 million, falling to ¥670,000 and then ¥620,000 above that. What is left after social insurance is taxed at 5% to 45%, and the reconstruction surtax adds 2.1% of that tax.
Resident tax is 10%. It uses the same employment income deduction but a basic deduction of ¥430,000, less a small adjustment credit, plus a ¥5,000 levy that includes the forest environment tax. It is paid from June of the next year and shown here against the salary it is charged on.
What it does not do. Bonuses, dependants, spouse deductions, life insurance, iDeCo and furusato nozei are not included, and premiums are worked on the monthly pay rather than its exact grade. Health rates differ by prefecture and by company health insurance society, so the rate is an input. At a few salaries the law makes take-home pay fall as pay rises, and the calculator keeps those steps. Sources are listed on the page, checked on 29 September 2026. An estimate, not tax advice.
A single employee in Tokyo under 40 earning ¥5,000,000 in 2026 pays about ¥733,686 in social insurance, ¥91,100 income tax with the surtax and ¥242,131 resident tax including the levy. That leaves about ¥3,933,083 a year, or ¥327,757 a month, roughly 79% of the gross salary.
The 2026 tax reform raised the minimum employment income deduction from ¥650,000 to ¥740,000 and the basic deduction to ¥1,040,000 for total income up to ¥4.89 million, ¥670,000 up to ¥6.55 million and ¥620,000 up to ¥23.5 million. The changes apply to all of 2026 income and are settled at the December year-end adjustment.
Resident tax is 10% of taxable income, 4% to the prefecture and 6% to the municipality, worked out with a basic deduction of ¥430,000 rather than the income tax one. A small adjustment credit of up to ¥2,500 is taken off, and a flat ¥5,000 levy is added in Tokyo's wards. Tax on 2026 salary is paid from June 2027.
With the 2026 deductions a single employee paying the usual social insurance starts paying national income tax at a salary of about ¥2,088,000 a year. Resident tax starts earlier: total income above ¥450,000, a salary above ¥1,190,000, brings the ¥5,000 levy, and the 10% income portion follows soon after.
Employees pay half of the health insurance premium (9.85% in Tokyo for Kyōkai Kenpo from March 2026), half of the 0.23% child support levy, 9.15% for employees' pension and 0.5% employment insurance. Those aged 40 to 64 also pay half of the 1.62% care insurance premium. Together this is about 15% of pay.
Kyōkai Kenpo sets a different rate for each prefecture, and large companies often run their own health insurance society with its own rate. The default is the Tokyo rate of 9.85% from March 2026. Copy the total rate from your payslip or your insurer's page to get your own figure.
