This calculator follows a UK employee's salary for the 2026-27 tax year, 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027, from gross pay to take-home pay. It assumes salary is the only income and the standard tax code 1257L.
Scotland. Scottish taxpayers use six bands on taxable income: 19% on the first £3,967, then 20%, 21% from £16,957, 42% from £31,093, 45% from £62,431 and 48% above £125,140.
What it does not do. It does not deduct pension contributions or salary sacrifice, which would lower the tax. It leaves out savings and dividend income, benefits in kind, the Marriage Allowance, the High Income Child Benefit Charge and employer National Insurance. Every figure comes from gov.uk and gov.scot, read on 29 September 2026, and the sources are listed on the page. An estimate, not tax advice.

In England, Wales or Northern Ireland in 2026-27, £40,000 leaves £27,430 of taxable income after the £12,570 allowance. Income tax at 20% is £5,486 and National Insurance at 8% is £2,194.40, so take-home pay is £32,319.60 a year, or about £2,693 a month, before any pension or student loan.
Above £100,000 the personal allowance falls by £1 for every £2 of income. Each extra £1 is taxed at 40%, and it also removes 50p of allowance, which adds another 20p of tax. Together that is 60p of income tax per pound, plus 2p of National Insurance, until the allowance is gone at £125,140.
On taxable income after the £12,570 allowance: 19% up to £3,967, 20% to £16,956, 21% to £31,092, 42% to £62,430, 45% to £125,140 and 48% above. Expressed on total salary, the higher rate starts at £43,663. National Insurance is the same in Scotland as in the rest of the UK.
No. Workplace pension contributions, especially salary sacrifice, reduce the income that is taxed, and above £100,000 they can restore part of the personal allowance. The figures here assume no pension deduction, so your real take-home pay will be lower in cash but your tax will also be lower than shown.
