Estimates only, not financial advice. What you type stays on your device. Checked against sources on 18 Oct 2026.The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme pays interest every month for 5 years on one deposit, then returns the deposit. At the 7.4 per cent rate notified for October to December 2026, ₹9,00,000 in a single account pays ₹5,550 a month and ₹15,00,000 in a joint account pays ₹9,250 a month.
Rates and rules read from the sources listed on this page (the earliest on 18 Oct 2026); they may have changed since.
Under "Account", choose "Single", "Joint, 2 adults" or "Joint, 3 adults".
Pick one of the deposit chips, or set the "Deposit" slider within the limit for that account.
Check the "Interest rate" against the rate notified for the current quarter.
Read "Paid every month for 5 years" with "Over 5 years" beside it, then press "Share result".
The Post Office MIS calculator works out the monthly payment from the National Savings Monthly Income Account, the scheme people know as POMIS. Enter the deposit and the number of holders, and it shows the monthly interest, a year of payments, the five-year total and what early closure would pay back. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
The arithmetic is simple and the scheme fixes every step. Monthly interest = deposit × rate ÷ 12, rounded to the nearest rupee, with fifty paise or more rounded up. It is paid a month after the deposit and every month after, and interest you leave unclaimed earns nothing more. After five years the deposit is repaid.
| Deposit at 7.4% | Paid every month | In 5 years |
|---|---|---|
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹617 | ₹37,020 |
| ₹5,00,000 | ₹3,083 | ₹1,84,980 |
| ₹9,00,000 | ₹5,550 | ₹3,33,000 |
| ₹15,00,000 (joint) | ₹9,250 | ₹5,55,000 |
The limits come from the 2019 scheme as amended on 31 March 2023: a minimum of ₹1,000 in multiples of ₹1,000, only one deposit per account, up to ₹9 lakh in a single account and ₹15 lakh in a joint account of two or three adults. A person may hold several accounts, but for the ceiling their share of a joint account counts as a half or a third, so the calculator shows each holder's share.
Closing early is allowed after one year: 2% of the deposit is deducted if you close on or before three years, and 1% after that. The interest already paid is not taken back.
The rate is notified every quarter by the Ministry of Finance, but an account keeps the rate of the day it is opened for all five years. Check the current rate at the post office or on indiapost.gov.in and change it above if it has moved.
What this does not do: it does not work out tax on the interest, which is taxable, and it does not add up several accounts against the ceiling for you.

At the 7.4% rate notified for October to December 2026, ₹9,00,000 in a single MIS account earns ₹5,550 every month: 9,00,000 × 7.4% ÷ 12. That is ₹66,600 a year and ₹3,33,000 over the five years, with the ₹9 lakh returned at the end.
Up to ₹9 lakh in a single account and ₹15 lakh in a joint account held by two or three adults, since the 31 March 2023 amendment. The minimum is ₹1,000, in multiples of ₹1,000, and an account takes only one deposit. For the ceiling, a joint holder's share counts as a half or a third.
The rate notified for October to December 2026 is 7.4% a year, paid monthly, and it has not changed since 1 April 2023. The Ministry of Finance announces the next quarter's rate around the end of each quarter; an account keeps its opening rate for all five years.
Yes, after one year. Closing on or before the third anniversary costs 2% of the deposit, and closing after three years costs 1%. On ₹9 lakh that is ₹18,000 or ₹9,000 deducted from the amount repaid. Interest already paid each month is kept.
No. The scheme says monthly interest not claimed by the account holder earns no additional interest, so nothing compounds. Most people have it credited to a post office savings account, where it earns the savings rate, or move it into a recurring deposit each month.
