How to add a border to an image

Drop a picture on the page or press Select an image; a thin white border shows on the preview at once.

2

Set the Border width in percent of the picture or in pixels, and pick a colour or any colour with the picker.

3

Choose Rounded corners or Circle if you want a softer or round frame.

4

Press Download PNG, or choose JPG or WebP first; nothing is uploaded.

About Add Border to Image

Add Border to Image puts a coloured frame around a picture and can round its corners or make it a circle. The preview shows the exact result as you change anything, and the saved file is drawn by the same code at full size.

The border goes outside. No part of the picture is covered: a 1,000 by 800 photo with a 20 pixel border becomes 1,040 by 840. Width in percent is measured on the picture's shorter side, so 3 percent looks the same on a phone photo and a large scan; choose pixels for an exact frame on a website. White, black, cream and grey are one tap away, and the picker gives any other colour.

Rounded corners. Corner roundness is a percent of the shorter side, from a gentle 4 percent to 50 percent, which makes a pill shape on a long picture. With a border, the frame's outer corners curve by the picture's radius plus the border, so the band stays the same width all the way round.

Circle. The largest centred square of the picture becomes a circle, the shape profile pictures and team pages use. A border becomes a ring. If the face is not in the middle, crop it first with Crop Image.

Clear corners. Outside a rounded or round shape the file is transparent in PNG and WebP, so the picture sits on any background. JPG cannot be transparent, so the page says so before you save and fills the corners with the background colour you pick.

Files. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and HEIC open, up to 50 MB. The result is saved as PNG by default, or JPG or WebP with a quality slider, and is named after the picture.

Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a border to a photo?

Drop the photo on this page; a thin white border shows on the preview straight away. Change the width and the colour until it looks right, then press Download. The border is added outside the photo, so none of the picture is covered or cut off.

How thick should a border be?

A border of 2 to 5 percent of the shorter side suits most photos, and percent keeps the same look on a small phone picture and a large scan. Choose pixels when an exact size matters, for example a 20 pixel frame for a website. The result grows by twice the border.

How do I round the corners of a picture?

Choose Rounded corners and drag Corner roundness. About 8 percent suits a photo, 20 percent a card and 50 percent makes a pill shape. Save as PNG or WebP so the corners stay clear; JPG has no transparency and fills them with a background colour.

Can I make a round profile picture?

Yes. Choose Circle and the largest centred square of the picture becomes a circle, saved as a PNG with a clear outside. Add a border for a coloured ring. For a face that is not in the middle, crop the picture first with Crop Image, then make it round here.

Why are the corners white in my JPG?

JPG cannot store transparent pixels, so anything outside a rounded or round shape has to be filled with a colour, white by default. Pick another background colour with the picker, or save as PNG or WebP to keep the corners clear on any background.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The border is drawn by your own browser on your device and the file is saved from there, so the picture never reaches a server. Camera details such as location are not copied into the saved file, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
