Convert Any File

files

Photos, documents, spreadsheets, archives: drop it and see what is possible

Processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Updated on 24 Oct 2026.

Some files convert cleanly, some convert with a cost, and some cannot be converted in a browser at all. This page tells you which of the three you have before you spend any time on it. A HEIC photo becomes a JPG in one tap; a PNG turned into a JPG loses its transparency, and you are told so first; a camera RAW file is refused with the reason and a way around it.

Next:
  • Export the sheet as CSV Save any sheet of an Excel workbook as CSV, with clean dates
  • Open the CSV as Excel Turn CSV files into a tidy Excel workbook with real numbers
  • Document Converter Turn a document into another format, with the cost stated first

How to check if a file can be converted

1

Press Select a file and choose the file you need in another format.

2

Read the result: a clean conversion, a conversion with a cost, or one that cannot run in a browser.

3

Read the cost lines to see what will be lost before you start.

4

Press the main button or a Next step chip to carry on with the right tool.

How Convert Any File works

Convert Anything is the page to use when you have a file and are not sure what it is or what to do with it. Instead of asking you to pick a tool first, it asks for the file first. The opening bytes are read on your own device, matched against the signature every format carries, and the file is named in plain words: a HEIC photo, a PDF, an Excel workbook, a zip archive. The size is shown next to it, and so is one sentence about what that kind of file is for.

Then it proposes. If only one thing sensibly follows, you get one question and one button: "That is an ICO image. Shall we convert to PNG?" If several things follow, the likeliest is the button and the others are one tap each, never a list of twenty formats to read through. When a conversion costs you something, the cost is stated before you press anything, not discovered in the download: PNG to JPG is smaller, but transparent areas become white.

The name of a file is only a label, and labels get changed, dropped or rewritten by the phone that took the photo. When the name and the bytes disagree, this page says so once and carries on with the truth, so you convert the file you actually have. Drop several at once and they are grouped by what they really are, so you see "3 HEIC photos, 1 PDF" and get one proposal per group rather than a queue of identical questions.

The rest of the article, and all 7 questions about Convert Anything, are on the Convert Anything page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a file when I do not know what format it is?

Drop it on this page. The first bytes are read in your browser and matched against the signature the format carries, so the file is named whatever its extension says. You then get the conversion people usually want for that format as one button, and the alternatives one tap away.

Why does the page say my file is not the type its name says?

Because the name is only a label. Phones, download managers and rename operations all change extensions without changing the contents, so a file called photo.png is often really a JPEG. The page says this once, then continues with the real format, so you convert what you actually have.

Which files can this site not convert?

Camera RAW, and some audio and video formats (FLAC, OGG, AVI). Each one says why and what to do instead: RAW needs a decoder for every camera maker, and those audio and video formats are not read here yet. Photoshop PSD files, fonts, and RAR and 7z archives were once on this list; they now open in PSD to PNG, Font Converter and the TAR.GZ Extractor.

Does it convert the file straight away when I drop it?

No, and that is deliberate. Dropping a file only identifies it, which costs nothing. The conversion runs when you press the button, so you are never surprised by a job you did not ask for and you always see what it will cost, such as transparency being lost, before it starts.
