Turn a JSON file into an Excel workbook, with nested lists on their own linked sheets
Processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Checked against sources on 17 Oct 2026.JSON to Excel Converter turns a JSON or JSON Lines file of up to 100 MB into an .xlsx workbook in your browser. Each list becomes a sheet, nested objects become dotted columns such as address.city, nested lists get their own sheet linked by row number, and IDs over 15 digits stay exact. Nothing is uploaded.
Press Select a JSON file, drop one, or paste JSON into the box; it is read on your device.
Check the preview: one sheet per list, nested objects as dotted columns such as address.city.
Choose whether nested lists get their own sheets or stay as JSON text in their cell.
Press Download to save the .xlsx workbook.
JSON is how APIs, apps and exports hand over data, but it is a tree and a spreadsheet is a grid. This page decides the grid for you, the way a person would.
How the tree becomes sheets.
| In the JSON | In the workbook |
|---|---|
| A list of objects | One sheet, one row per object, one column per key |
| A nested object, "address": {"city": ...} | A column named address.city |
| A list of plain values, ["red", "blue"] | One cell: red, blue |
| A list of objects inside a row, "items": [...] | Its own sheet; each row says which parent row it belongs to |
| An object holding several lists | One sheet per list, other keys on an Info sheet |
Keys missing from some objects simply leave their cell empty, and the columns are the union of all keys in the order they first appear. If you prefer one flat sheet, nested lists can stay as JSON text in their cell instead.
Values keep their type. Numbers are numbers you can sum, true and false are Excel booleans, and text stays text. Integers with 16 or more digits, such as order or account IDs, are kept as text, because Excel stores only 15 significant digits and would silently change the last ones.
Excel's limits are respected. A sheet holds at most 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns, and a cell 32,767 characters; anything longer is cut and you are told how many cells. Sheet names are cleaned of the characters Excel forbids and kept within 31 characters.
Errors point at the line. Invalid JSON is reported with its line and column, such as a trailing comma at line 12, so you can fix it in any editor. JSON Lines, one object per line, is recognised by itself.
Tested by rebuilding 300 random documents from their sheets with a separate reader, and by reading the workbook back with ExcelJS. Nothing is uploaded.
Drop the .json file on JSON to Excel Converter, or paste the JSON into the box. A preview shows the sheets and their first rows straight away. Press Download and an .xlsx workbook saves, ready for Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, with numbers you can sum and filter.
Nested objects become dotted columns, so address.city sits beside name. Lists of objects inside a row, such as the items of an order, get a sheet of their own, and each item row carries the row number of its order, so the two sheets can be matched with a filter or a lookup.
Yes. Choose Nested lists as JSON text, and each nested list stays in its parent's cell as JSON instead of getting its own sheet. Plain lists of values, such as tags, are always one cell with the values separated by commas.
Excel keeps 15 significant digits, so a 19-digit ID such as 1234567890123456789 would be changed to 1234567890123456800 if stored as a number. Integers with 16 or more digits are written as text to keep every digit exactly as in the JSON.
Yes. A file with one JSON object per line (.jsonl or .ndjson) becomes one sheet with a row per line. An API response like {"data": [...], "meta": {...}} gets a sheet for the data list and an Info sheet for the other fields.
No. The file is read and converted by your own browser, and the workbook is written on your device. API exports often hold customer records or keys, and none of it reaches a server; closing the tab leaves nothing behind.
Rates and rules change; check the source before you rely on a figure.
