This calculator follows a French salary from gross to net for a single private-sector employee (non-cadre) with one part and no children, with salary as the only income.
Contributions first, at 2026 rates. The employee pays 6.90% old-age insurance on pay up to the plafond de la sécurité sociale, €48,060 in 2026, plus 0.40% on all pay. Agirc-Arrco supplementary pension takes 3.15% up to the plafond and 8.64% above it, with the CEG balancing contributions of 0.86% and 1.08%, and the CET of 0.14% once pay passes the plafond. CSG of 9.2% and CRDS of 0.5% are charged on 98.25% of gross pay. Employees in Alsace-Moselle pay an extra 1.30% for health.
Then income tax. Taxable pay is gross pay less the contributions and the deductible 6.8% of CSG; the other 2.4% of CSG and the CRDS stay taxable. A 10% allowance for professional expenses comes off, at least €509 and at most €14,555. The barème for one part is 0% up to €11,600, 11% to €29,579, 30% to €84,577, 41% to €181,917 and 45% above. When the tax is at most €1,982, the décote reduces it by €897 minus 45.25% of the tax. Above €250,000 the high-income contribution of 3% applies.
Which year. Contributions use the 2026 rates. Income tax uses the barème the loi de finances pour 2026 set for 2025 income, the latest one in law; the barème for 2026 income arrives with the next budget.
What it does not do. It leaves out the company health plan and prévoyance, the APEC contribution for cadres, the quotient familial for couples and children, tax credits, frais réels and the €61 collection threshold. Sources are listed on the page, read on 29 September 2026. An estimate, not tax advice.
Brut is the salary in the contract, before the employee's social contributions. Net (net avant impôt) is brut less those contributions; income tax is then taken at source, which leaves net après impôt. In 2026, €40,000 brut for a non-cadre employee loses €8,336 of contributions, CSG and CRDS (21% of brut), leaving €31,664 net; after €1,967 of impôt for one part, €29,697, or €2,475 a month.
A single non-cadre employee on €40,000 gross pays about €8,336 in contributions, CSG and CRDS, which leaves €31,664 before income tax. Income tax for one part is about €1,967 after a small décote, so net pay is roughly €29,697 a year, or €2,475 a month. A company health plan would lower it further.
For 2025 income, taxed in 2026, the barème is 0% up to €11,600, 11% from €11,601 to €29,579, 30% to €84,577, 41% to €181,917 and 45% above. Each rate applies only to the slice inside its band. A single person with no children has one part, so the barème applies to the whole taxable income.
CSG at 9.2% and CRDS at 0.5% are charged on 98.25% of gross pay, the 1.75% abatement standing for expenses, up to four plafonds (€192,240 in 2026). Of the CSG, 6.8% is deducted from taxable income, while the remaining 2.4% and the CRDS are not, so they are taxed even though you never receive them.
The décote reduces income tax for modest incomes. For a single person, when the tax from the barème is €1,982 or less, it is cut by €897 minus 45.25% of that tax. A tax of €1,400 becomes €1,136.50, and small amounts are cancelled entirely, which is why many low salaries pay no income tax.
French income tax for a year is set by the following year's budget. The loi de finances pour 2026 fixed the barème for 2025 income, and the barème for 2026 income will come with the loi de finances pour 2027. Until then the latest barème in law is the closest estimate, and the page says so.
Partly. Old-age insurance, Agirc-Arrco, CEG, CET, CSG and CRDS apply to cadres and non-cadres alike and are included. The small APEC contribution for cadres, and the employee share of the company health plan and prévoyance, depend on the employer and are left out, so actual payslips usually show slightly lower net pay.
