The transitievergoeding is the statutory payment a Dutch employer makes when it dismisses an employee or does not renew a temporary contract. This calculator follows the Rijksoverheid page that explains how the amount is worked out, read on 16 October 2026.
One third of a month per year. For every full year of service the payment is 1/3 of the gross monthly salary. Since 1 January 2020 it builds up from the first working day, so it is also due after a dismissal in the probation period.
The months after the last full year. The rest of the contract is paid in proportion: the pay received over that part divided by the monthly salary, times one twelfth of a third of the monthly salary. Rijksoverheid's example: 9 years and 5 days on €3,000 a month, where the 5 days paid €800, gives €9,000 + €22.22 = €9,022.22. Type 800 / 3,000 = 0.27 extra months to reproduce it.
The monthly salary. The base salary plus the holiday allowance (at least 8%), one twelfth of a fixed year-end payment or 13th month, and the average of shift allowances, overtime, bonuses, profit shares and variable year-end payments. Lower pay through sickness or leave does not lower it.
The cap. From 1 January 2026 the payment is at most €102,000 gross, or one gross annual salary if that is higher. The calculator uses twelve times the monthly salary for the annual salary and says when the cap applies.
Not included. Dismissals before 2020, costs of outplacement or training an employer may deduct with your written consent, a collective agreement's replacement scheme, the UWV compensation for employers, and the wage tax withheld from the gross amount. An estimate, not legal advice.

The transitievergoeding is one third of the gross monthly salary for each full year of service, counted from the first working day. The months after the last full year add a proportional part. On €3,000 a month, 9 years of service gives €9,000 before any part-year amount.
From 1 January 2026 the transition payment is capped at €102,000 gross. An employee whose gross annual salary is higher than €102,000 can receive up to one annual salary instead. The cap rises every year in line with collectively agreed wages, so earlier years had lower maximums.
Holiday allowance counts: the monthly salary for the transitievergoeding is the base salary plus the holiday allowance, one twelfth of a fixed year-end payment, and the average of shift allowances, overtime, bonuses and profit shares. A €3,500 salary with 8% holiday allowance becomes €3,780.
Employees dismissed during the probation period do receive a transitievergoeding, because since 1 January 2020 the payment builds up from the first day of the contract. Rijksoverheid's example: 5 days paid €800 give a transition payment of €22.22.
An employer may deduct costs of outplacement or training aimed at another job, but only with your written consent beforehand, if the costs were specified and made for you. Costs to improve your current job, wages, and costs recovered elsewhere cannot be deducted. The calculator shows the amount before deductions.
Rijksoverheid states the transitievergoeding and its €102,000 cap as gross amounts, worked out on the gross monthly salary in your contract. Wage tax is withheld before the money reaches you, and what you keep depends on your other income that year, which this calculator does not estimate.
