Estimates only, not financial advice. What you type stays on your device. Checked against sources on 30 Oct 2026.

Under PM Fasal Bima Yojana the farmer pays at most 2% of the sum insured for Kharif food grain and oilseed crops, 1.5% for Rabi and 5% for commercial or horticultural crops. On a sum insured of ₹60,000 per hectare, 2 hectares of a Kharif crop cost the farmer ₹2,400.

How to calculate PMFBY premium for farmers

1

Under "Crop type", choose Kharif, Rabi or "Commercial or horticultural".

2

Enter the "Sum insured per hectare" notified for your crop and district, and the "Area insured".

3

Turn on "I know the full premium rate" to enter the insurer’s rate, "District" and "State" if you have them.

4

Read the estimate under "You pay" and, with the full rate, "Government pays", then press "Share result".

About the PMFBY Premium Calculator

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) insures crops against yield loss from natural causes. The farmer pays a small, capped share of the premium and the government pays the rest. This calculator works out the farmer's premium in rupees for your crop and area, and, if you know the full premium rate for your district, how much the Centre and the State pay.

The farmer's rates. The PMFBY Operational Guidelines on pmfby.gov.in set the most a farmer pays as a share of the sum insured: 2% for Kharif food grain and oilseed crops (cereals, millets, pulses, oilseeds), 1.5% for the same crops in Rabi, and 5% for annual commercial and horticultural crops. If the insurer's actuarial rate for the district is lower, the farmer pays that lower rate. Premiums of non-loanee farmers are rounded to the nearest rupee.

Who pays the rest. The gap between the full (actuarial) premium and the farmer's share is the subsidy. The Centre and the State share it 50:50, or 90:10 in the North Eastern states. The Centre's share counts only up to a full premium rate of 30% in rainfed districts and 25% in irrigated ones; above that the State pays. Some States also pay part or all of the farmer's share from their own budget.

Your two district figures. The sum insured per hectare is notified by the State for each crop and district, and the full premium rate comes from the insurer chosen for the district. Find both on pmfby.gov.in, at your bank, at a Common Service Centre or in the State's notification. The ₹60,000 on this page is an example.

What the calculator does not do. It does not tell you the sum insured for your district, check enrolment dates, or estimate a claim.

Frequently asked questions

How much premium does a farmer pay under PMFBY?

At most 2% of the sum insured for Kharif food grain and oilseed crops, 1.5% for Rabi food grain and oilseed crops, and 5% for commercial and horticultural crops in either season. If the insurer's actuarial rate for the district is lower than that cap, the farmer pays the lower rate instead.

How is the PMFBY premium calculated?

Multiply the sum insured per hectare by the area in hectares, then by the farmer's rate. For a Kharif crop with a sum insured of ₹60,000 per hectare on 2 hectares, the sum insured is ₹1,20,000 and 2% of that is ₹2,400. For 5 acres, first multiply by 0.4047 to get 2.02 hectares.

Who pays the rest of the crop insurance premium?

The government. The difference between the full premium and the farmer's share is a subsidy shared equally by the Centre and the State, or 90:10 in the North Eastern states. The Centre's share is limited to a full premium rate of 30% in rainfed districts and 25% in irrigated districts; beyond that the State pays.

Where do I find the sum insured for my crop?

The sum insured per hectare is notified by the State for each crop and district, from either the scale of finance or the average yield multiplied by the MSP or farm gate price. The figure is shown on pmfby.gov.in when you apply, and is also available at your bank branch or a Common Service Centre.

What is the actuarial premium rate?

The full cost of insuring the crop, as a percentage of the sum insured, quoted by the insurance company chosen for the district. The farmer pays only the capped share; the rest is the government subsidy. When the rate is not known, the calculator still gives the farmer's premium, which is all the farmer pays.

Is the PMFBY premium different for loanee and non-loanee farmers?

The rates are the same. A farmer with a crop loan usually has the premium deducted from the loan account by the bank. A non-loanee farmer pays it when enrolling through a bank, a Common Service Centre or the pmfby.gov.in portal, and that premium is rounded to the nearest rupee.
